Avoid treated, painted, coated, glued, or composite wood, as well as rubber and asbestos. If you choose a wood fire, use dry, seasoned firewood—and check local fire rules, burn bans, and air-quality alerts before lighting it.
What not to burn in your backyard
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “Never burn green wood, construction waste, plastic, garbage, or yard waste” in a recreational fire. These materials can create more smoke and harmful pollution than a fire using clean, dry firewood. Trash-burning emissions are released directly into the air without treatment or filtration, according to the EPA.
Do not burn waste or unsuitable materials
- Construction and demolition waste: Keep plywood, particle board, glued wood, and other construction debris out of a backyard fire.
- Treated, painted, or coated wood: Do not burn pressure-treated lumber or wood with paint, coatings, or other finishes.
- Plastic, foam, and rubber: Do not use them as fuel, including foam and plastic packaging.
- Household trash and yard waste: Do not burn garbage, cardboard, leaves, brush, or other yard debris in a recreational fire.
- Other unsuitable materials: The EPA’s broader wood-burning guidance also lists wet or moldy wood, colored-ink materials, asbestos, manure, and animal remains. That list is general guidance for wood-burning appliances; it does not establish that each item has identical legal status in every location.
Why burning the wrong materials matters
Wood smoke contains fine particles that can affect health. The EPA identifies children and teenagers, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease—including asthma and COPD—as especially sensitive. Smoke can also affect neighbors, so consider wind direction and nearby homes or outdoor spaces when deciding whether to light a fire.
Burning household trash is different from an ordinary recreational fire using clean, dry firewood: the emissions from trash burning are released directly to the atmosphere without treatment or filtration. Avoiding inappropriate materials helps reduce unnecessary smoke and pollution, but even a clean wood fire produces smoke.

Use dry, seasoned firewood
If you decide to have a wood fire, use dry, seasoned firewood. The EPA recommends checking firewood with a moisture meter; its recommended moisture content is about 20 percent. The EPA also advises seasoning and drying wood outdoors for at least six months, but elapsed time alone does not guarantee that a particular piece is dry enough.
Wet or green wood tends to produce more smoke. A moisture reading gives you a practical check rather than relying only on how long the wood has been stored.

Check air quality and local rules before lighting a fire
The EPA advises against wood fires on air-quality alert days. Local governments may also restrict recreational fires, and a no-burn day or burn ban can prohibit backyard or open burning. Rules for allowable fire types, distances, and other conditions vary by location and can change; EPA guidance does not determine what is permitted at a particular property.
- Check current air-quality alerts for your area.
- Look up current guidance from your local fire department or government, including any burn ban or no-burn-day notice.
- Confirm that your planned fire type and setup are allowed before lighting it.
The EPA’s relevant Burn Wise pages are historic material: the program stopped updating content on October 30, 2025. Treat its fuel and smoke advice as general guidance, and rely on current local authorities for restrictions in effect today.

Dispose of yard and household waste another way
Instead of burning leaves and other yard waste, the EPA suggests composting or recycling where available. Brush can be chipped, and household waste should go through licensed disposal or another appropriate local service. Check local government guidance for accepted options.

The EPA says natural gas or propane produces fewer harmful air pollutants than a wood-burning recreational fire. A gas fire is an emissions alternative, not a blanket safety guarantee: use equipment compatible with the fuel and follow its instructions, and check local restrictions before use. A gas fire does not automatically override a burn ban or other local rule.
