Fish fertilizer is made from fish or fish-processing by-products, but there is no single standard recipe. Products may be fish emulsion, hydrolysate, fish solubles, or fish meal, and their nutrient percentages and added ingredients differ. To know what is in a specific bottle or bag, read both its guaranteed analysis and its “derived from” statement.

What is fish fertilizer made of?

Many fish fertilizers start with fish-processing leftovers such as heads, guts, and bones. The USDA’s 2006 technical evaluation describes fish emulsion as material that is cooked, filtered, and stabilized with an acid; the species of fish, product type, and acid used can affect the resulting composition. USDA, Liquid Fish Products: Technical Evaluation Report (2006)

Illinois Extension describes emulsion as mostly liquefied fish with solids strained out and the pH adjusted to help prevent spoilage in the container. Other fish-based fertilizers are processed differently. Fish hydrolysate is a distinct form, and the USDA’s 2019 report also identifies fish solubles and fish meal as common forms. Illinois Extension (2022) · USDA, Fish-Based Fertilizers (2019)

Some products include ingredients beyond fish material. For example, the Bonide Garden Rich Hydrolyzed Fish Fertilizer 2-4-0 label lists fish protein hydrolysate and phosphoric acid, identifying the acid as a stabilizer. That label is an example, not a universal formula. Bonide product label

What nutrients are in fish fertilizer?

Depending on the product, fish fertilizer may provide nitrogen, phosphorus, and sometimes potassium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, or trace elements. The proportions vary; “fish fertilizer” by itself does not tell you the nutrient analysis.

These published analyses illustrate the variation. They are examples from different products and sources, not a market average or a recommended formula for every garden.

Is fish emulsion the same as fish hydrolysate?

No. They are different product forms, made or processed differently. Emulsion is commonly described as liquefied fish with solids removed and pH adjusted for storage. Hydrolysate is a separate form; its ingredients and nutrient analysis depend on the product. Do not treat the terms as interchangeable or assume that one label describes every fish fertilizer.

What do the numbers on a fish fertilizer label mean?

The three N-P-K numbers give percentages, in order, of nitrogen (N), available phosphate expressed as P₂O₅, and soluble potash expressed as K₂O. The “derived from” statement lists the source materials used for those nutrient guarantees. Colorado State University Extension, Understanding Fertilizers

  • Compare the guaranteed analysis on the exact product, rather than choosing by the words “fish fertilizer” or “fish emulsion.”
  • Read “derived from” as well as N-P-K to see which materials supply the guaranteed nutrients.
  • Follow the product label’s application directions; a nutrient analysis is not, by itself, a dosage instruction.

Does “fish fertilizer” mean it is approved for certified-organic use?

Not necessarily. An organic-sounding product name does not establish that the product qualifies for every certified-organic use. The USDA’s report describes regulatory conditions, but eligibility should be verified for the specific product and intended use. USDA, Fish-Based Fertilizers (2019)

Should you apply fish fertilizer to your soil?

Base nutrient applications on what the soil and plants need, not simply on the product’s fish-based ingredients. Colorado State Extension warns that heavy applications of unneeded phosphate and potash contribute to soil salts. Soil testing can help establish whether those nutrients are needed before you apply fertilizer. Colorado State University Extension, Understanding Fertilizers

What is established about product safety?

There is not a representative current dataset here that establishes heavy-metal or other contaminant levels across fish fertilizer brands and batches. That does not establish that all products are either safe or contaminated. For a concern about a particular fertilizer, consult its current label and manufacturer information rather than generalizing from the product category.
