A heat pump is an electrically powered heating and cooling system that moves heat instead of making it by burning fuel or using electric resistance. In winter, it draws heat from outdoor air or the ground and moves it indoors; a reversible system can move indoor heat outside in summer. Whether one is a good fit depends on the home, climate, equipment and installation.
How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump uses a refrigeration cycle to collect heat in one place and release it in another. In heating mode, it takes heat from outdoor air or the ground and transfers it into the home. In cooling mode, the cycle reverses and carries indoor heat outside, much like an air conditioner.
Because it transfers heat rather than generating it, a heat pump can deliver more heat energy than the electricity it consumes. ENERGY STAR says a certified air-source heat pump can deliver up to three times as much heat energy as electrical energy used. That general efficiency description is not a promise of a particular household’s bill savings.
What kinds of heat pumps are there?
Heat pumps differ in where they collect heat and how they distribute conditioned air. The best configuration depends on the property and the work involved.

Ground-source systems use relatively stable ground temperatures, but the U.S. Department of Energy notes they commonly cost more to install than air-source systems. DOE’s 2021 geothermal consumer guide describes energy consumption 25% to 50% lower than air-source heat pumps; that range is guide context, not a guaranteed result for a particular project. Site work, design, energy prices and incentives affect the comparison, so there is no universal payback period.
Can a heat pump work in a cold climate?
Cold-weather performance depends on the specific model and the home. ENERGY STAR’s cold-climate air-source heat-pump certification verifies performance at 5°F. ENERGY STAR says systems continue operating below that temperature, while backup heat may be useful to heat most efficiently at still lower temperatures.

When comparing systems for a cold location, ask about the equipment’s low-temperature heating capacity and efficiency, defrost operation, and the plan for backup heat. An installer should also assess whether air sealing or other weatherization work would help the home retain heat.
How efficient is a heat pump?
Efficiency comparisons only mean something when the alternative is clear. DOE says current air-source heat pumps can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric resistance heating. This is not a guaranteed saving against a gas or oil furnace, or a prediction for every home. Actual energy use and bills depend on climate, the building envelope, distribution system, energy rates, sizing and installation.

For a useful comparison, have the installer explain the proposed model’s certified efficiency and expected performance under local conditions, alongside the current system and the home’s heating and cooling needs.

Start with the property, not a product listing. The system needs to be selected for the home’s loads and distribution, then installed to suit the design. DOE warns that poor sizing and selection can reduce performance, comfort and efficiency; ENERGY STAR advises working with a professional installer.

- Distribution: Determine whether existing ducts are suitable or whether ductless heads make more sense. For a mini-split, decide whether it is intended for a room, supplemental use or whole-home heating and cooling; ENERGY STAR says mini-splits can serve either supplemental or whole-home roles depending on needs.
- Climate performance: Compare cold-weather capacity and efficiency for the actual model, not just a general claim about heat pumps.
- Load and sizing: Ask the installer to assess the home, distribution system, heating and cooling loads, and local design temperatures. Do not size solely by floor area or a retail listing.
- Backup heat: In colder conditions, clarify what backup system is included or recommended, when it operates and how it affects comfort and operating costs.
- Installation and service: Confirm the installer’s plan for equipment placement, distribution, commissioning and ongoing service. Installation quality affects performance.
- Incentives: Check current local utility, government and manufacturer programs, and verify eligibility for the exact model and project. Offers and rules change by place and date.

What should you ask an installer?
- How will you determine the home’s heating and cooling loads and local design temperatures?
- Is the proposed system intended to heat and cool the whole home or only selected spaces?
- What capacity and efficiency does this exact model provide at low outdoor temperatures?
- How will existing ducts, insulation and air leakage affect the design?
- What backup heat is planned, and under what conditions will it run?
- Which current incentives apply to this exact equipment and installation, and what are the eligibility deadlines?
