Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start by finding where cold air enters: the overhead garage door, the door into the house, or fixed gaps in the walls and ceiling. Each needs a different fix. Use weatherstripping on moving doors and caulk or suitable gap-filling materials on stationary cracks; for an attached garage, the boundary with the living space matters as much as comfort.
Find the draft before choosing a seal
On a cold or windy day, check the garage in three places: around the large overhead door, around any pedestrian door, and along the shared walls and ceiling between an attached garage and the home. Look for visible daylight, cracked or flattened seals, and drafts. A draft at one location does not tell you whether the problem is a worn door seal, a poorly fitting door, or a fixed construction gap.
Identify the specific opening first, then choose a repair that suits whether the joint moves. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes weatherstripping for doors and other moving parts from caulk for cracks and openings between stationary components (DOE air-sealing guidance).
Seal the overhead garage door
If the draft comes from the large door, inspect its perimeter and bottom edge for damaged, compressed, or missing weatherstripping. A garage door bottom weather seal may be the right replacement, but it is not a universal part: the door’s existing retainer or channel and the seal profile determine compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-Functional Garage Weather Stripping – Blocks heavy rain, cold drafts, leaves, dust, and debris from seeping under garage door. Forms tight threshold seal as wind blocker and rain guard. Transforms garage into cleaner, more usable space while improving home energy efficiency.
- High-Quality Rubber for Long-Lasting Durability – High-density EPDM rubber provides superior ozone and sunlight resistance. Remains flexible from -40°F to 240°F. Resists cracking, tearing, and fading after years of daily use. Engineered for harsh climates with maximum freeze resistance.
- U&O Ring Design with End Plugs for Dual Protection – U-shaped seal with O-ring dual-layer structure on garage door bottom. Creates two barriers against moisture and air infiltration. Includes custom-fit rubber end plugs to seal center channel and prevent shifting in track. Closes internal tube pathway against external intrusions.
- 5/16" Double T-End for Flexible DIY – METAL TRACKS NOT INCLUDED. Standard profile fits most T-track residential/commercial garage doors; compatible with double T-end systems. Easy measure, trim, and cut with scissors/knife. Cut-to-size for custom fit.
- Installation Guide – Rubber creates friction against metal rails during installation. Clear debris from old track, apply soapy water or silicone spray into track channels. New seal slides through tracks in minutes for quick DIY setup.
- Identify the existing setup. Check the current bottom seal and the retainer or channel that holds it. If you cannot identify the arrangement, get help from the door manufacturer or a qualified installer before ordering.
- Measure the door and the seal needed. Use the measurements to check the replacement’s required length; do not assume a product will fit based on the phrase “garage door seal” alone.
- Compare the replacement details. Verify that the profile matches the retainer, review the material’s stated weather and temperature suitability, and check that the seal can close the observed gap without obstructing door travel.
- Check operation after installation. The door should travel normally and close against the seal. If the door binds, will not close, or still leaves a gap, stop and have the fit assessed rather than adding rigid filler to a moving joint.
Replacement methods vary with the door and retainer, so follow the product and door-maker instructions. Caulk and spray foam are not substitutes for weatherstripping where the door moves.
Weather-seal the door between the garage and home
For an attached garage, treat the door into the living space separately from the overhead door. DOE and ENERGY STAR’s air-sealing guide recommends a self-closing, insulated, metal, fire-rated door with a good weather seal. Check the door’s perimeter for worn weatherstripping and whether it closes properly.

Preserve the door’s required fire protection and self-closing function. Do not casually remove, wedge open, or modify it; follow the door manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements. If the door is damaged, does not latch or close reliably, or you are unsure whether a proposed change is permitted, consult a qualified contractor or local building official.
Close fixed gaps at the garage-home boundary
Cracks around framing, openings, or other stationary joints need a different approach from a door seal. Depending on the gap and substrate, appropriate materials may include caulk, foam backer rod followed by caulk, or low-expansion spray foam. Match the material to the opening and follow its directions. Do not use rigid caulk or foam across a joint that must move.

DOE identifies foam backer rod with caulk or low-expansion spray foam for construction gaps at the interface between an unfinished garage and conditioned space. For sizable, concealed, or hard-to-reach gaps in shared walls or ceilings, an energy professional can help identify the air pathway and select a suitable repair.
Account for combustion safety and indoor air quality
Sealing an attached garage is also a health and safety measure: the DOE/ENERGY STAR guide advises thorough air sealing of shared walls and ceilings to help keep harmful garage chemicals and gases out of living areas. It also says not to start a vehicle with the garage door closed. Never idle a vehicle or gas-powered equipment in the garage.

Air sealing can have consequences beyond drafts. ENERGY STAR warns that, in some homes, sealing may contribute to combustion appliances such as water heaters backdrafting, and may trap pollutants including carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds; tighter homes may also need mechanical ventilation. Its guidance on problems to identify before sealing recommends professional inspection and testing where combustion-related concerns exist. Get a qualified professional’s assessment before sealing if the garage contains combustion appliances, ventilation is unusual or uncertain, or you see hidden gaps or suspect air may be moving into the home.

The DOE says that caulking and weatherstripping can offer quick returns on investment, often paying for themselves in a year or less (DOE, Air-Sealing Essentials). That is a general statement, not a garage-door-specific payback estimate. ENERGY STAR relays an EPA estimate of average savings from air sealing and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and basements—not garages—so it should not be used to predict the savings from sealing a garage. No garage-specific savings figure is established by the cited guidance.
