Weber Grill Troubleshooting: No Gas Flow and Weak Flame

A safe, model-specific sequence for troubleshooting no gas flow, weak flame or ignition trouble on a Weber propane grill.

If your Weber propane grill will not ignite or produces only a weak flame, first reset the gas-flow limiter using the procedure in the manual for your exact model and region. Keep the lid open, turn every burner knob to OFF, then open the cylinder valve slowly. Use the manual’s lighting instructions to check whether the problem is gas supply or ignition. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, stop and contact Weber support.

Start with the correct manual and a safe setup

Weber grills and regional LPG connections can differ, so use the owner’s manual for your exact grill rather than assuming one reset sequence fits every model. Find manuals and exploded views through Weber’s manuals lookup, using the serial number or exact model name or number.

  1. Open the lid and turn all burner control knobs to OFF. Weber warns that knobs left on while opening the tank can activate the regulator’s flow-limiting device.
  2. Open the LPG cylinder valve slowly. The cited owner manual directs users to wait 60 seconds; opening the valve too quickly can restrict gas flow. Treat this timing as specific to that manual, not a universal instruction for every Weber grill.
  3. Follow the lighting instructions in your model’s manual. If the grill still will not light, use the manual-lighting check below to narrow down the cause.

Weber’s EMEA Spirit low-heat guidance uses a different reset sequence: turn off the LPG cylinder, confirm burner knobs are off, wait five minutes, then follow the ignition instructions. Its flow-limiter note is marked for certain countries (FR, NO, DK, FI, PT and ES). Use the procedure that applies to your grill and market; do not combine the five-minute and 60-second timings.

Check whether the fault is ignition or gas flow

Use the manual-lighting procedure specified for your model. Weber’s Spirit troubleshooting guidance recommends a long-reach grill lighter for this check. Keep your face and hands away from the burner, leave the lid open, and follow the manual’s safety directions.

  • If a burner lights manually: Weber’s diagnostic guidance points to the electronic ignition system as the likely issue. Continue with the model’s ignition troubleshooting rather than treating this result as proof of a gas-supply fault.
  • If it does not light manually: proceed to the supply and burner checks below. This result alone does not establish that the regulator has failed.

A long-reach grill lighter helps distinguish ignition trouble from a gas-flow problem; it will not fix an empty cylinder, restricted regulator, kinked hose or blocked burner port.

Check common causes of weak or absent flow

Low or empty cylinder

Weber lists a low or empty LPG cylinder as a possible cause of low or uneven heat. Refill or replace the cylinder if needed, following local handling and connection guidance.

Kinked hose

Look for a bent or kinked fuel hose between the cylinder and grill. Weber advises straightening a kink. Do not disconnect or dismantle gas-carrying parts as part of this basic check.

Dirty burner ports

Dirty burner ports can affect heat and ignition. With the grill safely off and cool, clean only as directed by the owner’s manual; Weber’s support guidance recommends a stainless-steel bristle barbecue brush for the ports.

Flow limiter or ignition issue

A flow limiter may activate if burner knobs are not off before the cylinder valve is opened or if the valve is opened too quickly. A burner that lights manually points instead toward an ignition-system problem. These are manufacturer-listed possibilities, not a diagnosis of an individual grill.

When to stop and contact Weber

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, do not use the grill and do not attempt to repair gas-carrying components. Weber’s bypass-mode support article says: “If you find a gas leak don’t use the grill, and get in touch with us at [email protected] or 1-800-446-1071 and we’ll be happy to help.” Contact Weber support for a leak concern or for a fault that remains after the model-specific checks.
