“Wax flowers in China” does not name a single tradition. Depending on the source, it can refer to wax harvested from insects that live on trees, to wax models shaped into blossoms, to real flowers preserved for display, or to Chinese artificial-flower crafts made from paper, silk, velvet or rice-paper-plant material. A classical Chinese agricultural text uses the word “flowers” for a waxy growth on branches, which is a material-production account rather than a description of decorative blooms. Working out which meaning a reader has in mind is the first step to understanding the subject.
Five different things the phrase can mean
The sources that address this subject describe five distinct practices. They share a vocabulary of “flowers” and “wax” but differ in material, process and period. The table below sets them side by side.
| Practice | Material and process | What the sources establish | Commonly confused with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insect-produced wax (historical) | Wax-producing insects on tree branches; the wax is harvested, melted, filtered and formed into blocks | A translated passage from the classical agricultural text Nongzheng Quanshu; the composition date is not stated in the available sources | Decorative wax blossoms |
| Wax-flower modelling | Wax sheeted and shaped into flower and fruit forms | A historical English-language instruction manual, Wax flowers, how to make them, which covers sheeting wax and modelling fruit; it is not established as documenting a Chinese tradition | Insect wax |
| Preserved flowers | Real flowers bleached, dehydrated and dyed in solution, then dried | China National Silk Museum workshop report, published 17 January 2023 | Wax models |
| Beijing-style artificial flowers (Jinghua) | Paper, silk and velvet | Official Beijing cultural feature, published 2024 | Preserved flowers |
| Tongcao flowers | Material from the rice-paper plant (tongcao) | China Daily report, 2025, hosted in a U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filing | Wax models and preserved flowers |
Wax as a harvested material
The oldest sense of the phrase comes from a classical agricultural text. In a translated passage of the Nongzheng Quanshu, wax-producing insects are transferred to trees, where they feed on sap and produce wax. The translation describes white growths that “appear all over the tree” and states that the material is “collected and used for refining wax.” The word “flowers” here describes a growth on branches that was gathered for its wax, not a decorative object made from wax.
The passage describes the production sequence in the following order:

Two cautions apply. The source is a digitized historical text read through an English translation, so its terms are historical and should not be read as modern plant or insect nomenclature. The sources available here also do not establish when the passage was written, so no date should be attached to it.
Wax modelling is a separate craft
Wax-flower modelling, in which wax is shaped into petals, leaves and fruit, is a different activity from wax production. A historical manual titled Wax flowers, how to make them covers sheeting wax and modelling flowers and fruit. It is useful as a reference for wax modelling methods. The sources do not show that it explains a Chinese tradition or Chinese insect-wax practice, and the scan available here is a historical document, not confirmation of a current edition or availability.

Preserved flowers: real blooms, not wax
Preserved flowers are often mistaken for wax blossoms because they keep their form for long periods. In fact they are real flowers. A January 2023 report from the China National Silk Museum describes a workshop in which participants treated flowers to retain their shape. The report sets out the process in four stages:
- Flowers are selected.
- The flowers are bleached in a mixed methanol and ethanol solution.
- They are moved quickly into a polyethylene glycol solution containing dye, which dehydrates and colours them.
- The flowers are dried.
The workshop ended with creative making guided by an instructor. The museum presents these steps as a description of a workshop, not as a method for home use.

The museum also gives a brief history of the technique. It says preserved flowers first appeared in Germany in the 1990s, became popular in Western Europe, developed rapidly in Japan, and entered China more than ten years before its 2023 report, where they became widely popular. That account places the craft in recent decades. It is not evidence of an older Chinese wax-flower tradition.

Tongcao flowers
A 2025 China Daily article, hosted in a FARA filing, describes a Beijing craftsperson who is a fourth-generation inheritor of the craft and who makes flowers from tongcao, identified in the article as rice-paper-plant material. The historical framing belongs to the journalist and the interviewee and should be read as their account rather than as a general history of the craft.

Palace Museum records show that crafted floral imagery appears across many media in Chinese decorative arts. One Qing-period painted-enamel flower basket has a copper body, a gold covering and enamel decoration, and the museum notes that it was modelled on an earlier European enamel basket. A separate Qing ornamental potted arrangement combines coral, jade, other gemstones and metalwork in peony forms. These objects illustrate the range of floral decoration in court art; they do not document wax flowers.
