A Hackaday report published August 31, 2025, shows maker Uncle Jessy trying to spray Bondo spot putty onto a 3D-printed Iron Man mask. It is an intriguing finishing experiment, not a documented 3M application method: 3M’s technical sheet directs users to apply the putty in thin coats with a plastic spreader. The available report does not establish the spray mixture, thinning ratio, equipment, or results for different print materials.
What happens in the reported spray experiment?
Hackaday’s report describes Uncle Jessy trying to spray Bondo spot putty onto a 3D-printed Iron Man mask. The surfaced account does not provide a complete transcript or enough technical detail to reproduce the experiment reliably.
In particular, it does not establish which exact putty variant was used, whether or how it was thinned, the spray equipment, or spray-specific safety measures. It also does not establish compatibility across filament types. Treat the video as a reported experiment rather than a tested recipe.
How does that differ from 3M’s documented method?
3M describes Bondo Professional Glazing & Spot Putty as a product for pinholes, scratches, nicks, minor dents, stone chips, and other small surface imperfections. Its product page lists primer, metal, fiberglass, and aluminum as bonding surfaces; it does not list 3D-printed plastics. That leaves compatibility with a particular filament unconfirmed by the cited manufacturer information.

- VERSATILE FORMULA repairs scratches, pinholes, holes and nicks
- CAN BE USED ON metal, fiberglass and wood as well as sanded and primed or painted surfaces
- FEATURES 3-minute work time
- Fast drying sandable in 30 minutes
- Non-staining to help ensure a consistent paint finish
For application, 3M’s Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty Technical Data Sheet specifies thin coats applied with a plastic spreader. It warns that thick applications can crack and describes no hardener requirement. These are the documented instructions for the product, not instructions for spraying or thinning it.
Documented product-sheet figures
| Item | 3M’s stated guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Working time | 3 minutes | 3M technical data sheet; year not stated in the accessed sheet. |
| Dry time | 20 minutes | 3M technical data sheet; year not stated in the accessed sheet. |
| Minimum application temperature | 45°F (7°C) | 3M technical data sheet; year not stated in the accessed sheet. |
These figures describe the product under its documented use; they are not timing guarantees for a thinned spray mixture or for application to a 3D print.

What does ordinary 3D-print finishing involve?
A separate workflow from Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes using glazing and spot putty, then applying several coats of automotive spray filler primer and sanding between coats to create a polished finish on 3D prints. That article provides broader finishing context; it does not establish that 3M endorses the spray experiment.
For its own putty, 3M specifies sanding between layers with 320–400 grit and removing dust before priming or painting. The sheet says the material can be wet- or dry-sanded. Those steps belong to the manufacturer-documented spreader workflow and should not be assumed to describe the unknown sprayed mixture.

What safety guidance is available?
3M’s technical data sheet states: “Use this product only with adequate ventilation and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (eye, skin, respiratory and hands).” It does not specify a respirator model or filter rating. The available report does not establish the protection needed for the experiment’s specific mixture or spray method, so do not infer spray-specific PPE from the general product-sheet warning; consult the current label and safety data sheet for the product actually being used.

- The exact product variant and any thinning agent or ratio.
- The spray equipment and application settings.
- How much coverage it provides or how much sanding it requires compared with spreader application.
- How it adheres to different filament materials.
- The safety controls appropriate to the actual sprayed mixture and process.
