There is no universal washing machine lid lock wiring diagram. A connector pinout, wire color, or resistance value from one washer model cannot be assumed to apply to another brand or even another model in the same family. The safe starting point is your washer’s full model number, followed by the service document written for that exact machine. The most detailed example available for this topic is the Whirlpool/Maytag direct-drive top-load washer service manual W10864849, and its schematic and test values apply to that platform only.
Find your exact model before you open a diagram
Model numbers are printed on the rating plate, usually on the inside edge of the lid, the door frame, or the back panel. Once you have it, look for a service manual or technical sheet that names that model family. Published documents use different connector labels for similar lock assemblies. The Whirlpool/Maytag manual calls the lock harness connector J6, while a separate Maytag/Whirlpool technical sheet uses P12. Matching the label to the wrong document is one of the most common ways to test the wrong pins.
If you cannot identify the model, stop there. The lid lock assembly is also model-specific, so a replacement that looks identical may not have the same motor, switch arrangement, or harness.
What the Whirlpool/Maytag schematic shows
The service manual Whirlpool & Maytag Direct Drive Top Load Washer, W10864849 (PDF, November 2018) is marked for service technicians. Its Figure 1, captioned “Lid Lock Schematic,” shows connector J6 with pins 1 through 7 and five functional labels: LOCK SW, LID SW, HOME SW, LOCK MOTOR, and SW OUT. The drawing includes a 12 VDC lock motor. The assembly is shown as a gray-jacketed DC lock unit.

Wire colors and pin assignments in that drawing belong to this platform. Do not read them as a standard convention for other washers. When you compare a wiring diagram with your own machine, check the connector label, pin count, and printed function on the harness itself before you take a measurement.
Resistance checks by component and switch state
The manual’s resistance table is the reference for bench checks on this platform. Make all measurements with the connector removed and the washer de-energized, using a digital multimeter on its ohms setting.
| Component | J6 contacts | Unlocked | Locked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lock motor winding | J6-2 and J6-3 | 35 Ξ© (Β±5 Ξ©) | 35 Ξ© (Β±5 Ξ©) |
| Lock switch, home | J6-1 and J6-4 | 0 Ξ© | Open circuit |
| Lock switch, lock | J6-1 and J6-7 | Open circuit | 0 Ξ© |
| Lid switch | J6-1 and J6-5 | Lid closed: 0 Ξ©; lid open: open circuit | Same lid-dependent result |
The motor winding reads the same whether the lock is engaged or released, so a change in that reading points to the winding itself rather than to the switch positions. The three switch checks are the useful test for whether the lock is changing state as it should.

Diagnostic sequence
The manual puts the connector and control checks ahead of replacing the lock. Follow the order below.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Run the lid-lock test in Service Test Mode. Entry steps are described in the model-specific manual, not in general guides.
- If the test fails, disconnect washer power before going further (see the safety section below).
- Access the main control and confirm that connector J6 is fully inserted and latched. A partly seated connector can produce a fault that looks like a failed lock.
- Remove J6 and measure the motor winding and the three switch states against the table above.
- If the switch readings do not match the table, the manual identifies a problem in the lid-lock mechanism. Inspect and replace the lock assembly only after confirming the model.
- If the lock readings are good and the fault persists, the manual moves to the main control board for further testing.
The manual also describes a powered indicator check. Use only the procedure written for your model, and do not improvise energized tests on a live harness.
Safety before any test
The Whirlpool/Maytag manual states: “Disconnect power before servicing. Failure to do so can result in death or electrical shock.” Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit at the breaker before removing panels or disconnecting J6. Never bypass, jumper, or defeat a lid switch or lock interlock to make the machine run during testing. A washer that runs with its interlock defeated can spin with the lid open.

Fault codes and what they indicate
The Whirlpool wiring diagram W11250101 Rev B (PDF, January 2020) lists two lid-related codes:
- F5E1: “Lid Switch Fault – Lid is Open.”
- F5E3: “Lid Will Not Lock Or Unlock.”
These codes help frame the symptom, but the diagram itself directs the technician to the applicable tech sheet for detail. A code does not identify a replacement part, and a code from one model cannot be used to diagnose another.

Connector labels across documents
The Maytag/Whirlpool technical sheet W10351412A, Rev A is hosted in the Alliance Laundry Systems parts document library. The copy available does not show a publication date. This sheet uses the P12 connector label and gives the same 35 Ξ© (Β±5 Ξ©) winding check, with switch-state checks similar to the J6 table. The match in values does not mean the two connectors are interchangeable across models. Use the document that matches your own washer.

What to check before buying a replacement lock
If the test points to the lock assembly, confirm each item below before ordering a part:
- The exact model number and any revision suffix on the rating plate.
- The connector designation and pin count on your harness (J6 or P12 in the documents above, or another label).
- The lock actuator type and its specified test values in the model’s manual.
- The switch functions (home, lock, lid) and their state table, compared with your own readings.
- The manufacturer’s parts documentation for that model, including any superseded part numbers and harness compatibility notes.
Buy from the manufacturer’s model-specific parts documentation rather than from a generic listing. A part that fits by appearance can still have a different connector or motor.
The sources establish that connector labels and component values vary by model, but they do not identify any particular replacement part for a given washer.
