“Wobbly legs” can mean shakiness, weakness, loss of balance, or dizziness when standing—and those sensations can have different causes. There is no proven routine that prevents unexplained wobbly legs. Focus on staying safe, noticing the pattern, and getting medical advice when symptoms recur, persist, are sudden or severe, or come with warning signs.
What do you mean by “wobbly legs”?
Describe the sensation as precisely as you can. Dizziness may feel like spinning, lightheadedness, or being woozy; unsteadiness is a loss of balance or not feeling steady. Shaky legs are not necessarily weak legs, while actual loss of strength or difficulty walking may need a different assessment. These descriptions can overlap, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. Mayo Clinic’s overview of dizziness distinguishes these experiences and notes that timing, triggers, duration, and accompanying symptoms can help a clinician identify a cause.
What can cause unsteadiness or shaky legs?
Balance relies on information from the eyes, sensory nerves, and inner ear. When those signals do not agree, a person may feel dizzy or unsteady. Inner-ear conditions can cause vertigo, a spinning sensation. Examples include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which can cause brief spinning after a change in head position; vestibular neuritis; migraine-related vertigo; and Ménière disease. These are possibilities when dizziness or spinning is present, not explanations to assume for leg symptoms.
Other possible contributors to dizziness or unsteadiness include a drop in blood pressure after standing up too quickly, poor blood flow, some nervous-system conditions, medicine side effects, anxiety disorders, anemia, overheating, and inadequate hydration. Low blood sugar is another possibility, usually for people with diabetes who use insulin. These examples are not a self-diagnosis checklist; a clinician can assess which, if any, fits the pattern.

Can anxiety make legs feel shaky?
Yes. Anxiety can come with physical shakiness, and muscle tension or distraction may make walking feel less natural or more difficult. That context does not establish anxiety as the cause of any individual’s symptoms. New, persistent, or concerning symptoms still warrant appropriate medical assessment. The Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust’s fear-of-falling leaflet discusses these feelings in the context of anxiety and confidence while walking.
What to do when your legs feel wobbly
- Reduce immediate risk. If you feel dizzy or unsteady, do not rush. Pause and sit or lie down if needed. Avoid driving or operating machinery while dizzy; symptoms in those settings can raise the risk of an accident.
- Notice the pattern. Record whether the sensation is spinning, lightheadedness, shakiness, unsteadiness, or actual weakness; when it starts and how long it lasts; and whether it follows standing, head movement, exertion, heat, or a medication dose. Note other symptoms too.
- Arrange medical assessment when appropriate. Seek advice if dizziness or vertigo is repeated, sudden, severe, long-lasting, or has no clear cause. Treatment depends on the cause and symptoms, so an exercise, balance aid, or supplement should not be treated as a universal preventive fix.
When are wobbly legs an emergency?
Seek emergency medical care for new, severe dizziness or vertigo accompanied by any of the following, as listed by Mayo Clinic:

- Sudden, severe headache or chest pain; a rapid or irregular heartbeat; or trouble breathing.
- Loss of feeling or movement in an arm or leg, stumbling or trouble walking, or facial weakness.
- Fainting, seizures, confusion, or slurred speech.
- Double vision, sudden hearing change, or ongoing vomiting.
If you have cancer
For someone diagnosed with cancer, new walking difficulty or wobbly legs can be especially important when they occur with spinal pain, tingling or numbness, limb weakness, legs giving way, or changes in bladder or bowel control or emptying. The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust leaflet on early warning signs of spinal cord compression says to get advice immediately if these warning signs occur. Follow your own care team’s urgent-contact instructions; the leaflet’s phone details are local, not a general number for everyone.
