The City of Wanneroo’s streetscape and verge review, endorsed by Council in February 2024, sets out two things residents need to know: who looks after a verge depends partly on its access, and City-managed areas are scheduled for different maintenance frequencies. The City says the approach addresses safety and sustainability as it prepares for future groundwater-allocation reductions.
What changed in Wanneroo’s verge maintenance?
The City reviewed its streetscape and verge management in 2023, and Council endorsed the review in February 2024. The City says City-managed streets receive at least 17 maintenance visits each year, with additional services for particular locations and road types. This is a service schedule, not a guarantee that every verge receives the same work or frequency.
The City identifies safety, sustainability and future groundwater constraints as reasons for the approach. In an 8 April 2025 announcement, Mayor Linda Aitken said the City was preparing for impending groundwater-allocation reductions. The announcement did not give a precise effective date or the amount of the reduction.
Who is responsible for your verge?
Start by identifying whether the verge is a standard attached verge or a disconnected verge. The City’s service-review page says owners are responsible for landscaping standard attached verges, watering grass and pruning plants and shrubs so sightlines remain unobstructed.

How often are City-managed areas serviced?
The City’s service-review page states a minimum of 17 maintenance visits annually for City-managed streets. A PerthNow report by Liam Murphy, published 18 April 2025, gave the following more detailed rotation schedule. These are reported intended frequencies, not verified current performance.

PerthNow reported that reducing Wanneroo city-centre streetscaping from 36 to 26 rotations a year was intended to reduce traffic disruption. It also reported an estimated additional annual cost of $1.7 million. That figure is an outlet-reported estimate, not a confirmed final expenditure.
Why is groundwater part of the plan?
The City says groundwater-allocation reductions are expected to take effect within the next five years, according to its 8 April 2025 announcement. The City’s announcement did not specify the reduction amount or an exact start date, so the available information does not establish precisely when or how verge services will change as a result.

The City’s stated response includes priority zones aligned with its Urban Forest Strategy. Mayor Linda Aitken said: “Water is a precious resource in Australia, and by introducing priority zones that align with the City’s Urban Forest Strategy, we can make sure we are prepared for these impending reductions.”
Can residents request a verge tree?
Yes. The City’s tree-request page lists applications for 2027 winter planting as open until 30 November 2026. Later requests may be considered for a following winter season, subject to budget allocation. The City says it plants approximately 3,500 trees annually and manually waters City-planted trees for their first two summers.
