Visualization helps make plume movement easier to understand and may inform bathroom design and cleaning research; the evidence discussed here does not show that visualization itself has made bathrooms safer.
What is a toilet plume?
A toilet plume is the droplets and aerosolized material released into the air during flushing. Researchers have measured plume generation under controlled conditions and have detected surrogate-virus contamination on bathroom surfaces. Those findings describe different steps in a possible exposure pathway; neither, by itself, establishes that a person became infected.
Visualizing a plume can make otherwise hard-to-see airflow and particle movement easier to grasp. That can help researchers investigate toilet design, flush behavior, and hygiene practices. It is not a direct measurement of illness risk.
How much can a toilet release when flushed?
In a 2013 controlled mock-up study, Johnson and colleagues reported up to 145,000 droplets per flush. Their high-energy flushometer produced more than three times as many droplets as the tested pressure-assisted toilet and more than twelve times as many as the tested high-efficiency toilet, even though the tested toilets used similar flush volumes. These results apply to the study’s particular toilet configurations and conditions, not to every toilet in homes or public restrooms. Johnson et al., 2013
#1 Best Overall
- RESTORES OVERALL TOILET PERFORMANCE: All in one toilet repair kit replaces inefficient fill and flush valves, leaky flappers, and broken toilet handles to make your toilet run like new.
- UNIVERSAL DESIGN: 400A toilet fill valve adjusts easily from 9 – 14 inches, fits most 2-inch flush valve toilets, and is ideal for use in 1.6 to 3.5 gallons per flush toilets or larger
- HIGH PERFORMANCE FLAPPER: PerforMAX high performance 2-inch adjustable water-saving toilet flapper maximizes water usage with each flush
- EASY INSTALLATION: Easily installs in 10 minutes or less to get your toilet flushing like new again
Particle counts are not infection counts. The number of droplets generated does not tell us how many carry a pathogen, how long they remain airborne, how much someone inhales, or whether that exposure causes disease.
Does seeing a plume mean it can make someone sick?
No. Aerosol generation, contamination detected using a surrogate virus, and proven human disease transmission are separate outcomes. A 2013 review by David L. Johnson, PhD, and co-authors concluded: “However, no studies have yet clearly demonstrated or refuted toilet plume-related disease transmission, and the significance of the risk remains largely uncharacterized.” The review does not provide a reliable population-level estimate of infection probability from routine toilet-plume exposure. Later experiments can help answer narrower questions, such as whether a cleaning protocol reduces surrogate contamination on a brush or in bowl water. Those measurements still do not establish human infection risk.
Does closing the toilet lid stop toilet plumes?
Not reliably, based on the evidence described here. In a 2023 study of United States restrooms, measured surface contamination did not depend on whether the lid was open or closed. That finding concerns contamination on the surfaces measured in that study; it does not prove that lid position never changes plume movement or that all toilet and restroom setups behave alike. Closing a fitted lid before flushing is still a reasonable household habit if convenient, but it should not be treated as a substitute for cleaning. In the 2023 study, the authors concluded that lid closure did not mitigate bathroom-surface contamination under their protocol and that disinfection of restroom surfaces might be needed to reduce virus cross-contamination.
What did the 2023 cleaning study measure?
Goforth and colleagues tested a commercial hydrochloric-acid product with a toilet-bowl brush and measured contamination by MS2, a surrogate virus. Compared with no product, the study’s cleaning protocol produced:
Rank #4
- Everything you need in one complete kit - Fixes: running, noisy, no/slow refill and no/weak flush toilets.
- More than 4 log10 reduction (over 99.99%) in surrogate contamination in toilet-bowl water.
- 1.6 log10 reduction (97.64%) in contamination of the bowl brush.
These results belong to the product and protocol tested. They support cleaning as a way to reduce the measured surrogate contamination in that experiment; they do not show that a particular retail cleaner prevents plume exposure or illness, nor do they rank commercial cleaners. Goforth et al., Impacts of lid closure during toilet flushing and of toilet bowl cleaning on viral contamination of surfaces in United States restrooms (2023)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should households do?
- Close a fitted lid before flushing if you choose, while recognizing that this has not reliably eliminated surface contamination in the cited study.
- Clean the toilet and nearby bathroom surfaces as part of ordinary hygiene, following the cleaner’s label.
- Wash your hands after using the toilet and after cleaning it.
The evidence here supports practical hygiene, not alarm: researchers have documented droplets and surrogate contamination, but have not established a quantified infection risk from routine toilet-plume exposure.

Why visualization matters for bathroom design
Making plume movement visible may help explain why flush energy, toilet mechanism, airflow, nearby surfaces, and cleaning practices merit investigation. The 2013 controlled work showed that different tested toilet mechanisms and flush energies can produce different droplet counts. The 2023 restroom study examined surrogate contamination on surfaces and the effect of lid position and bowl cleaning. These are useful but distinct lines of evidence: neither establishes which toilet design is safest in everyday use.
Visualization is therefore best understood as a research and communication tool. It can make a potential route for particle movement easier to study; determining whether that route creates meaningful disease risk requires evidence beyond a visible plume.
