Its legs, wheels or tracks, stabilizers and boom let an operator reposition it across ground where an ordinary excavator may struggle to travel or hold a stable working position. The careful, coordinated movements are what make these specialist machines so mesmerizing to watch.
What makes a walking excavator look like a spider?
Unlike a conventional excavator, which relies on a fixed pair of tracks or wheels, a walking excavator can adjust the position of its undercarriage components. Depending on the design, it may use independently articulated or telescoping hydraulic legs, wheels or tracks, and stabilizers. The boom also helps the operator negotiate obstacles and place the machine for work.
In the video accompanying New Atlas’s November 24, 2022 feature, clips from KAISER and Menzi show operators coordinating those movements. The machine is not walking autonomously: the operator controls its hydraulic components to move, brace and position it.
How does a walking excavator move?
- Position a leg or support. The operator adjusts one or more articulated legs, wheels or tracks to find a usable contact point on uneven ground.
- Stabilize the machine. Supports and the undercarriage are arranged to hold the excavator in a working position suited to the terrain.
- Reposition and repeat. The operator coordinates the other supports and the boom to shift the machine or negotiate an obstacle.
That sequence is a simplified description, not a universal operating procedure. Controls and movement depend on the model, terrain and configuration; specifications alone do not establish a safe operating limit for a particular slope.

Why use one instead of a conventional excavator?
Walking excavators are designed for difficult terrain, including steep, irregular or marshy ground, where conventional equipment may be unsuitable. The articulated undercarriage gives the operator more ways to position and stabilize the machine. That makes them a niche solution for challenging access and footing—not a general replacement for standard tracked or wheeled excavators.
New Atlas’s feature describes conventional machines as less expensive and sufficient for most ordinary excavation jobs, while noting that walking excavators bring greater maintenance demands and a steep learning curve. It does not provide a quantified total-cost comparison, so the trade-off should be treated as a practical editorial assessment rather than a universal cost calculation.

How did walking excavators develop?
The concept dates to the mid-1960s, but the available accounts differ on the exact first-machine date and attribution. New Atlas says Josef Kaiser built his first walking excavator in 1966 at the factory of his friend Ernst Menzi; KAISER’s official history dates Josef Kaiser Junior’s development of a walking excavator to 1965. KAISER separately records a four-wheel mobile walking excavator built during 1979–1984. These accounts do not fully settle the distinction between an early walking excavator and a later mobile model.
The design progression described by New Atlas runs from a simpler axle-and-feet arrangement to machines with independently articulated and telescoping hydraulic legs. Modern designs can alter leg position and reach, stabilize themselves, and use the boom to help negotiate obstacles.

What do current KAISER models show?
KAISER currently lists the S8, S10 and S12 among its mobile walking excavators. The figures below are published by KAISER on its product pages, accessed October 8, 2026; they are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified test results. They describe particular model pages and do not establish a performance advantage over other brands.

What should contractors compare?
For a job that may require a walking excavator, compare the terrain and machine configuration rather than relying on the “spider” label alone. Useful questions include:
- Can the machine reach and stabilize on the specific slope, ground conditions and access route?
- What are the model’s weight, hydraulic flow, leg movement, travel capabilities and wading depth?
- Which attachments are compatible and available in the region? KAISER lists options including quick changers, tiltrotators, stone pickup buckets, demolition hammers, winches and multiple bucket types; the S12 page also lists a mulcher, drill ring and Griffy cutter.
- Is local service available, and can the crew accommodate the machine’s maintenance needs and learning curve?
Attachment compatibility and availability should be confirmed for the specific model and region. No single specification establishes universal efficiency, safety or performance superiority; site conditions and the chosen configuration matter.
