Installing a 2-megawatt generator is a coordinated site, mechanical, electrical, fuel, and permitting project—not simply setting equipment in place and connecting wires. The video title does not identify the generator model, fuel, location, operating duty, or whether it exports power to a utility, so it cannot establish a universal installation sequence. Those details determine the design and approvals.
What has to be established before installation
The project team first needs the selected generator’s controlled documentation and the intended operating profile. The manufacturer’s instructions define requirements for that particular unit; a project engineer develops the site-specific design; the utility addresses any proposed grid connection; and the authorities having jurisdiction determine applicable permits and operating conditions.
Key decisions include:
- Equipment: the make, model, configuration, and manufacturer installation requirements.
- Operating duty: whether the set is intended for standby, prime, or continuous service. These are not interchangeable assumptions for fuel planning.
- Site and fuel: indoor or outdoor placement, fuel type and storage, and the arrangement of the fuel supply.
- Electrical role: whether the generator serves an isolated facility, provides standby power, operates in parallel with the grid, or exports electricity.
- Location: the jurisdiction and local rules governing construction, emissions, and operation.
Without these inputs, a claimed clearance, wiring arrangement, fuel capacity, permit determination, or commissioning sequence would be speculation.
Site layout, mechanical design, and permits
A scaled site plan helps coordinate the generator with adjacent buildings, property lines, the fuel connection or tank, and service and electrical equipment. The design also needs to account for access and the equipment’s manufacturer-specified installation conditions.

The City of Bellevue provides one local example: its guidance calls for mechanical and electrical permit plans before work on a stationary hard-wired generator, and describes when associated building changes require a building permit. Its requested materials include generator and fuel-equipment data sheets. For indoor installations, Bellevue also asks for ventilation calculations addressing supply air, exhaust, engine cooling, and combustion air, along with elevation views. These are Bellevue requirements, not a nationwide checklist; the project’s authority having jurisdiction must confirm what applies at its site.
Ventilation, exhaust, and fuel are equipment-specific
Airflow and exhaust
An indoor installation may need documented calculations for ventilation supply, engine cooling, combustion air, and exhaust against the selected manufacturer’s requirements. The Bellevue guidance illustrates the level of detail one jurisdiction requests, but its criteria should not be transferred to another location or generator without confirmation from the relevant authority and the equipment documentation.
Fuel supply and operating duty
Fuel type, consumption, storage capacity, piping, and transfer arrangements depend on the selected set and how it will operate. A Cummins installation-manual excerpt identified as issue 3 / 2023 distinguishes fuel capacity by continuous, prime, and standby application. It also describes a possible day tank and auxiliary pump where fuel-inlet restrictions exceed the manufacturer’s stated limits. The excerpt is hosted by Studylib; use the manufacturer’s controlled documentation for the chosen unit for actual design decisions, rather than treating that excerpt as a universal specification.
Electrical connection and possible utility export
Electrical work requires a project-specific design for the facility connection and the appropriate switching and protection. The title alone does not reveal whether this generator is islanded, standby-only, or grid-parallel, and those arrangements should not be assumed from the unit’s 2 MW rating.

If the project will export electricity to a utility, the owner must establish the interconnection process with that utility. PG&E’s published process is an example for export customers in PG&E territory; it does not establish the requirements of other utilities. A project that does not export still needs an electrical design suited to its intended relationship with the facility and power system.
Environmental and operating approvals depend on jurisdiction
Construction permission and permission to operate are related but distinct questions. Requirements may turn on the location, equipment details, emissions, and whether the generator runs only for emergencies or for another purpose. Do not assume that a permit is always required—or that an exemption automatically applies.

The UK Environment Agency’s guidance explains that specified-generator controls and medium-combustion-plant controls can both be relevant, while emergency-only backup treatment has its own conditions. Hong Kong’s Environmental Protection Department publishes a separate process for emergency-generator installation and emissions. These examples demonstrate jurisdictional variation; neither determines what applies outside its own jurisdiction.

For a project-specific account, the useful evidence is the equipment nameplate and manuals, approved plans, applicable permits, utility requirements if power will be exported, and records of the completed work. These establish what the installation was designed and authorized to do.
