When a Vermont Castings Radiance gas stove will not light, will not keep its pilot lit, or lights a pilot but never fires the main burner, these are three different faults with three different diagnostic paths. The path depends on whether your stove uses electronic ignition or a standing pilot, so identify the exact model and ignition system first, then use only the manual written for that configuration. The guidance below reflects manual text for the named configurations. It does not show that every Radiance-branded gas product works the same way.
Identify your exact stove and ignition system first
“Radiance” is a product name that covers more than one gas-heater model and control arrangement. Before you compare any instructions, record the following from your stove and its paperwork:
- The full model identifier from the rating plate, including any suffix. The manual title for one standing-pilot unit reads “Radiance RADVTBMSB,” so a partial model name is not enough to pick a manual.
- The fuel type the stove is set up for, natural gas or propane.
- Whether the control is a standing-pilot gas control knob or an electronic system with a control switch, ignitor and control module.
- Any control-system label visible on the unit.
Three manuals were examined for this guide. They were found on third-party document-hosting sites, not on an official support portal, so match the revision date against the paperwork that came with your stove before relying on any step.
| Manual (host site) | Revision or date | Ignition system covered | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation & Operating Manual, Radiance DV (DiscountStoves) | Marked 01/24 (January 2024) | Electronic ignition with ECM (control module) | Newest electronic-ignition RADVT no-spark and lockout checks |
| Radiance Direct Vent Gas Stove Manual (Woodstoves.net) | Revision R14, dated 07/20 (July 2020) | Electronic ignition; troubleshooting text and ignitor gap guidance | Older electronic revision; use only if it matches your model and serial |
| Radiance RADVTBMSB Installation & Operating Manual (Manualzz) | Revision not stated in the source | Standing pilot (SIT NOVA 820 gas control) | Standing-pilot units only |
Do not apply the electronic-control checks to a standing-pilot unit, or the standing-pilot sequence to an electronic unit.

Pilot will not light or there is no spark
Electronic ignition models
The 01/24 manual’s no-spark section gives owners a few checks they can make safely. Confirm that the stove is receiving power from the source the manual specifies, whether AC power, an adapter or a battery. Also confirm the control switch is not in the OFF position.
The remaining causes in the manual involve wiring, grounding, ignitor gap, the pilot solenoid and the spark coil or ECM. Those checks depend on electrical measurements and gas-valve components, so they belong with a qualified technician. The manual frames its troubleshooting guide as support for a qualified service technician, not as a homeowner repair sequence.
Standing-pilot models
The standing-pilot manual lists electrode alignment and gap, along with ignitor operation, as causes of a failure to spark. Keep this path separate from the electronic-control checks above. Do not adjust the electrode or ignitor unless the manual describes that step for your exact unit, and if the manual’s steps do not match what you see, stop and call for service.

Pilot lights but goes out
On standing-pilot units, the manual ties repeated pilot failure to pilot-generator or valve-related causes. Owners can follow the manual’s lighting instructions once. If the pilot still will not stay lit after several tries, the manual’s own instruction is:

Do not bypass a safety control or keep relighting the stove if you suspect a gas or venting problem.
On electronic-ignition units, a pilot that will not stay lit falls under the flame-sensing, pilot-assembly and control-module checks listed in the symptom table. Those are technician checks.

Pilot lights but the main burner does not
Treat this as its own symptom, not as a variant of no-spark. Both manuals cover gas-control and system-specific causes for it, and the right diagnosis depends on whether the stove has electronic ignition or a standing pilot. Record the symptom, the model and the ignition type, then hand that information to a qualified technician. Do not adjust gas valves or take live readings yourself.

Electronic lockout or intermittent shutdown
The electronic-ignition manuals use status and lockout indications as part of their troubleshooting flow. A lockout indication narrows the diagnosis only when you read it against the manual for your exact control revision. The 01/24 manual and the R14 manual both cover electronic ignition, but they are different revisions, so do not assume a code or indication means the same thing in both. Do not use one code table as a universal reference for all Radiance products.

The manuals identify two component types that may be needed on electronic-ignition units: a RADVT pilot assembly, which the R14 manual references for damage and replacement, and the ECM or ignition control module. Neither should be ordered on the assumption that it fits every Radiance gas stove. The evidence reviewed does not establish one pilot assembly, control module or valve as compatible across the product line.
Before you order, verify the following against the manual or with a qualified dealer:

When to stop and call a qualified technician
The R14 manual states: “If you do experience a problem, this troubleshooting guide will assist a qualified service technician in the diagnosis of a problem and the corrective action to be taken.” (Vermont Castings, Radiance Direct Vent Gas Stove manual, revision R14, July 2020.)
Stop troubleshooting and call a technician when a diagnosis involves gas controls, wiring, venting, disassembly or component replacement. If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas supplier from outside.
