Veneer tape temporarily holds veneer sheets or joint edges in position during handling and bonding. It is not the glue that attaches veneer to its substrate. The main distinctions to understand are whether the tape is water-activated or self-adhesive, and whether it is plain or perforated.
What veneer tape does
The Architectural Woodwork Standards’ 2009 Edition 1 glossary defines tape as “strips of gummed paper or cloth sometimes placed across the grain of large veneer sheets to facilitate handling and sometimes used to hold the edges of veneer together at the joint prior to gluing.” In practical terms, it helps keep veneer aligned while the work is prepared and pressed; the tape itself does not bond the veneer to the substrate.
Choose a tape for the job and process, then follow that product’s directions for application, pressing, and removal. The terminology describes useful differences, but does not establish one universally best tape or a reliable performance ranking across brands.
Water-activated and self-adhesive tape
Gummed or water-activated tape
Traditional gummed veneer tape has an adhesive activated by water. OSTERMANN instructs users of its tape to activate it with a small amount of water, applied with a sponge or wet cloth; the company says its tape can be sanded off after pressing. Schümann also describes specialist paper tape with a water-activated adhesive coating. These are product-specific descriptions, not instructions that apply identically to every tape.

Self-adhesive tape
Self-adhesive veneer tape is a dry-application option, distinct from gummed paper tape. Schümann describes its SF range as a blue polypropylene-carrier tape applied from above across the joint and removed after compaction and pressing. The manufacturer says the range is suitable for very thin veneer, including veneer 0.5 mm thick or less, and is intended to leave neither adhesive nor pressure marks. Treat those as claims for Schümann’s products, not guarantees for all self-adhesive tape.
Do not confuse tape with glue threads
Schümann’s SIFA glue threads are a separate veneer-joining system, not another name for paper veneer tape. Its thread sizes correspond to different amounts of adhesive.

Plain, two-hole, and three-hole tape
These labels describe the perforation pattern. Perforations can reduce how much tape material must be removed and can provide a view of the seam, but the details vary by product and task.
| Type | What the name means | Practical distinction in the cited guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Plain or no-hole | Continuous tape without perforations. | Highland Woodworking describes it as providing maximum hold. This is retailer guidance, not a controlled comparison. |
| Two-hole | Tape with two rows of holes. | Highland Woodworking says it is a little easier to remove than no-hole tape. |
| Three-hole | Tape with three rows, including a center row. | Highland Woodworking says the center row helps reveal the splice line so the user can check alignment. |
Schümann says regular perforation patterns reduce subsequent sanding work. That does not mean every perforated tape is easier to use or suitable for every panel-making method. Check the maker’s directions rather than assuming which face to tape or how a particular perforation pattern should be used.

How to choose a tape
Start with the workpiece and the steps you need the tape to support. Compare the options on these points:
- Application: Do you want a water-activated tape or a dry, self-adhesive system?
- Alignment: Would seeing the seam through perforations help you check the joint?
- Removal: How much tape will need to be removed, and what does the product maker specify about removal or sanding?
- Process: Is the tape intended for a hand, semi-automatic, or automatic process?
- Veneer and surface: Is the product specified for the veneer thickness and surface involved?
- Operating conditions: Are there product-specific temperature or handling limits?
Color and width may matter for matching veneer or equipment, but the cited product information does not establish universal rules for choosing either. Painter’s tape and packaging tape should not be treated as equivalent veneer tapes on the evidence available here.

Applying and removing tape
For gummed tape, use enough water to activate the adhesive without soaking the veneer. Wood Veneering’s practical educational guidance recommends moistening the tape without soaking it and lightly re-wetting it for removal. That is general educational advice, not a universal manufacturer instruction; the tape maker’s directions take precedence.
Removal claims are product-specific. OSTERMANN says its gummed tape can be sanded after pressing, while Schümann describes removal of its SF tape after compaction and pressing. Do not assume every tape will come away cleanly, or use another product’s removal method without checking the instructions for the tape in hand.

Product-specific temperature instructions
Published specifications illustrate why category-wide assumptions are risky. Schümann’s undated product page says its SF range is stable up to 120°C. Avery Dennison’s 2014 document for its described woodworking tape specifies a minimum application temperature of 32°F and says full adhesion is reached within 24 hours. These figures belong to the named products and documents; neither sets a general temperature rule for veneer tape.
