Uttar Pradesh’s cabinet approved Tata Sons’ proposal for a temple museum in Ayodhya on 25 June 2024. The planned museum is intended to present the history and architecture of temples across India. Hindustan Times reported in December 2025 that the proposed site had grown by 27.102 acres, to a total of 52.102 acres. The project remains proposed: the sources reviewed do not confirm that it has opened or give a verified opening date.
What is the Ayodhya temple museum project?
It is a proposed museum focused on the history and architectural development of prominent temples in India. The plan described by Hindustan Times spans architectural development from prehistoric times to the present and includes examples from northern, southern, eastern and western India. The Uttar Pradesh Eco-Tourism Development Board identifies Tata Sons as the project partner and says the company would design, build, finance and operate the project for 90 years. Who is responsible for the project?
The state cabinet approved Tata Sons’ proposal in June 2024. Hindustan Times later reported that a tripartite memorandum of understanding was signed on 3 September 2024 by the Union Ministry of Culture, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department and Tata Sons. The report also said a not-for-profit Section 8 company, or special-purpose vehicle, would be formed to execute the project. The reported MoU and proposed SPV describe the project’s intended framework; they do not establish that construction is complete. Hindustan Times, 2 December 2025
How much is the project expected to cost?
Hindustan Times reported an estimated project expenditure of ₹750 crore in June 2024, citing Tourism Minister Jaivir Singh. The reported breakdown was ₹650 crore for the museum, including construction, design and interiors, and another ₹100 crore for additional development projects in Ayodhya. These are reported proposal estimates, not verified final expenditure. Hindustan Times, 25 June 2024
