Five poinsettias in a coordinated set of colors can anchor a holiday display, and the plants will look their best if you choose them carefully and keep them out of cold drafts and standing water. Poinsettias are no longer limited to red. Extension guidance from several universities describes pink, white, gold, yellow, orange, burgundy, marbled, and bicolored plants, so you can build a palette that fits your room instead of defaulting to one color.
Choose a color palette before you shop
Start with the room, not the plant. Decide which two or three colors will repeat across the display, then look for those colors at the store. Availability depends on the retailer and the season, so treat any color list as a menu of possibilities rather than a guarantee.

Across these sources, the colors overlap but are not identical, which is why a mixed set may need a little more searching at the store. Three palettes work well as starting points:
- Classic warm: red, white, and one marbled plant to tie the reds and whites together.
- Soft and bright: pink, white, and gold, with the gold plants placed near the center of the grouping.
- Rich autumn: burgundy, orange, and yellow, arranged so the deeper tones sit at the back or base.
These palettes are decorating suggestions. The horticulture sources above do not recommend any particular combination.

What the colored parts actually are
The showy color comes from bracts, which are modified leaves. The small yellow-green structures in the center of each bract cluster are the true flowers. This matters when you shop, because the true flowers are where pollen can appear, and pollen shedding is a sign of an older plant (see the selection checklist below).
Select five healthy plants
Iowa State University Extension recommends the following checks for each plant. A poinsettia that fails several of them is better left at the store, even if its color is perfect.
- Dark green foliage with no wilting.
- Brightly colored bracts with no yellow or brown spots or edges.
- Full leaves, with no missing lower leaves.
- Intact stems, with no broken or partly broken branches.
- Small central flowers that shed little or no pollen.
- No visible insects on leaves, bracts, or the soil surface.
Handle each plant by the pot or the base, not by the branches, because branches break easily. When you buy five, check each one separately. Mixing a fresh plant with a stressed one in the same display can make the stressed plant look worse, and it may be harder to correct the problem later.

Arrange the five plants as a display
The five-plant grouping is a styling choice. Two layouts work well in most rooms.
One focal plant with four supporting plants
Place the largest plant in the center or at the back of the group, then set the four smaller plants around it at slightly different heights. Put the most saturated color, such as red or burgundy, in the focal position, and use lighter colors like white or pink for the supporting plants. This keeps the eye on one point and avoids a crowded look.
An even line across a mantel, table, or entry
Space the five plants at roughly equal intervals and alternate colors so no two of the same shade sit side by side. A long mantel or dining table suits this layout, especially with a runner or tray underneath to catch any water that drains through a decorative cover.

Place the plants where they will last
Poinsettias prefer bright indoor light, and the Colorado State University Extension guidance on how much light they need describes bright indoor light without giving a specific number of hours. Set the plants near a bright window, but keep the leaves from touching cold glass. Avoid exterior doors, cold drafts, heating vents, fireplaces, and space heaters.
Temperature guidance differs slightly among extension sources, so the table below shows each range as stated. The shared principle is to avoid abrupt swings, cold drafts, and excessive heat.

Kansas State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini put the range this way in the same article: “Poinsettias do best with temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.” She also emphasized stability: “Consistency is key, so avoid drafts from windows or heat sources, such as the fireplace or space heaters.”

Water and drain correctly
Iowa State University Extension, Clemson University, and Colorado State University Extension all advise watering when the soil surface feels dry. Check by touch rather than following a fixed calendar, because room conditions and containers vary. Use this routine:
- Press a finger into the soil to check the surface. Water only when it feels dry.
- Remove the plant from its decorative cover before watering, or confirm that the wrap has drainage holes.
- Water thoroughly until water runs out of the bottom of the pot.
- Let the pot drain fully, then return it to the display.
- Empty any water that collects in the saucer or the bottom of the cover.
University of Delaware Cooperative Extension makes the same point about standing water. A plant sitting in water in a decorative foil or pot cover can decline even when the soil is moist, so drainage matters as much as the amount of water.
Recognize watering problems early

If a plant wilts, check the soil before adding water. If the soil is already wet, the problem is more likely drainage or root health than thirst.

Get the plants home safely
Cold damage can happen in the parking lot. Iowa State University Extension warns that brief exposure to freezing temperatures may blacken leaves and cause them to drop, so plan the trip with the following steps.
- Buy the poinsettias near the end of your shopping trip.
- Wrap or sleeve each plant before going outside.
- Carry the plants directly to a heated vehicle.
- Do not leave the plants in a cold car, even briefly.
Once home, move the plants straight to their display location rather than leaving them in a cold entry or garage.
Plan the display for the full season
A good display depends on the same basics every day: a bright spot away from drafts, a consistent temperature, a watering check by touch, and a saucer or cover that drains. Five plants need five times the attention of one, so check each pot on the same schedule. Remove any bracts that have faded or dropped to keep the grouping looking fresh.
