A 125-tonne roof truss was installed at Wrexham AFC’s new Kop stand in September 2026, according to construction trade publication Design and Build UK. The project is reported to be on programme for readiness for the 2027/28 season; that is a target, not confirmation of an opening date. The stand’s capacity is also subject to planning: the original permission covers 5,500 seats, while higher figures remain proposals or project intentions.

What is the latest construction update?

Design and Build UK reported on September 17, 2026, that a 125-tonne inverted ribbon truss had been installed at the new Kop stand. The report says the work remains on programme for completion ready for the 2027/28 season. This is the latest dated construction milestone located, but it does not establish that the stand will be complete or open by then. Design and Build UK

Earlier, McLaren Construction described enabling works, piling and foundations, with the main steel frame expected to begin rising in early spring 2026. Its 2025 project release estimated approximately 1,500 tonnes of steel for the structural frame. McLaren Construction

When is the new Kop expected to open?

The newest sourced schedule is readiness for the 2027/28 season, as reported by Design and Build UK in September 2026. Earlier statements set out different possibilities: McLaren’s December 2025 groundbreaking release said completion during the 2026/27 season, and in January 2026 club chief executive Michael Williamson told BBC Sport the club was looking at an early-2027 opening, with a section possibly available sooner. Those earlier estimates are superseded by the later reported target, and none is a confirmed opening date. Design and Build UK; McLaren Construction; BBC Sport

How many seats will the Kop and stadium have?

The figures refer to different stages and scopes. The original permission was for 5,500 seats in the Kop; a 2024 council decision removed a condition that had limited use to 4,900, allowing all 5,500 to be used when built. Higher numbers have been discussed, but proposed or intended capacity should not be mistaken for approved or delivered capacity.

Figure What it refers to Status in the cited source
5,500 Kop seats Original permission; Wrexham County Borough Council said in January 2024 that the 4,900-use condition was removed. Council update
7,750 Proposed Kop capacity A council highway consultation document for application P/2025/0594 discusses an increase of 2,250 from 5,500. This is a proposal in a transport consultation, not proof of final planning approval. Council consultation
17,750 Whole-stadium total in the same proposal Resulting total stated in the council highway consultation document; proposed, not established as an approved capacity. Council consultation
Just over 18,000 Whole-stadium project target McLaren described this as the intended total and linked the design to UEFA Category 4 compliance. It is a project target, not a confirmed capacity. McLaren Construction

In January 2026, Williamson told BBC Sport that the club had permission for 5,500 but was building for 7,500 additional capacity, and that additional permission would be needed for an 18,000-seat stadium. His remarks describe the club’s intended build and its view of permissions at that time, rather than a council approval. BBC Sport

Has the higher-capacity expansion been approved?

The material available does not establish approval for the higher capacity. Wrexham County Borough Council’s record for application P/2026/0551 showed an application associated with the stadium under consultation and awaiting decision when checked on September 4, 2026. Do not treat that status as a decision on the proposed increase. Council planning record

The council highway consultation document for P/2025/0594 also raised a transport question: it sought clarification about which town-centre parking spaces would genuinely be available on matchdays. The document assesses a proposal; it does not by itself confirm that the capacity change has been approved. Council consultation

What will the redevelopment add?

McLaren Construction says the new stand is intended to restore the stadium to a four-sided configuration. Its design includes modern concourses, improved accessibility routes, upgraded media and broadcast facilities, and enhanced back-of-house and matchday operations. The contractor says the design is driven by UEFA standards, Safety Advisory Group requirements and Green Guide principles; these are stated design aims, not evidence that completed facilities have already been certified. McLaren Construction

The council highway consultation document places the stadium about 300 metres from Wrexham General station. That is an assessment detail in the transport document, not a measure of matchday journey time or parking availability. Council consultation
