An old washtub can make a useful garden planter if it has adequate drainage, sits securely in its final location, and offers enough soil depth for the plants you choose. Check existing outlets before drilling, keep every outlet clear, and consider the tub’s material and history before growing food in it.
Can you use a washtub as a planter?
Yes. Washtubs and similar metal troughs can hold container plants, but they need to function as planters rather than water-holding vessels. Excess water must be able to escape: soil that stays saturated can deprive roots of air and contribute to root rot. The University of Minnesota Extension explains the importance of drainage in container gardening at its container and raised-bed guidance.
Start by identifying what the tub is made of and checking its condition. Look for an existing drain, corrosion, sharp edges, flaking coatings, and signs of what it may have held before. Its past use and surface condition matter especially if you plan to grow edible plants.
How to prepare and set up the tub
1. Choose its final location while it is empty
A tub filled with soil becomes heavy and difficult to move. Pick a spot with suitable light for the plants and a surface where water can drain away. If the ground is poorly drained or the outlet needs clearance, set the tub on stable pavers or blocks. Arrange the supports so they do not cover the drain.

2. Check whether the existing drain is enough
Some stock tanks already have a drain. Inspect its position and make sure water can leave freely where the tub will sit. Add holes only if the existing outlet arrangement does not provide adequate drainage.
3. Add drainage openings if needed
If you need more outlets, mark and drill openings in the base using a bit appropriate for the tub’s metal. A 2024 Ask Extension response describes its author drilling about five additional holes in troughs, but that is one gardener’s practice—not a universal hole count or specification. The same response describes applying galvanizing paint around drilled openings to limit rust; it is an optional reported practice, not a required treatment. See the Ask Extension response.
After drilling, remove metal debris and check that openings remain unobstructed. If you use a liner, drainage holes must pass through it as well as the tub.

4. Decide how to fill the bottom
You can fill the planting area with soil, or use durable material in the bottom to reduce how much soil is needed. The 2024 Ask Extension response lists old wood, logs, rocks, gravel, pottery shards, and plastic containers as possible fill. This is optional: bottom fill is not a substitute for open drainage, and the sources do not establish one fill method as best.

Add garden soil and, if appropriate for your planting plan, compost. The same response suggests landscape fabric to help keep soil from washing away. If you use fabric, make sure it does not obstruct outlets.
Choose plants for the usable soil depth and conditions
Measure the soil depth the tub will actually provide, then match it to the plants’ root needs. In a 2024 Ask Extension answer, the respondent gives 12–15 inches as an example for plants without deep roots and describes success growing tomatoes in another container with 15 inches of soil. Those are practical examples from one response, not guarantees or universal depth requirements for those crops. Read the full response and check the needs of your chosen varieties.

Also account for sunlight, local climate, and the tub’s exposure. Galvanized metal can heat in hot weather and cause soil to dry more quickly, according to an older Ask Extension response. In a hot, sunny position, check soil moisture regularly and water according to the plants’ needs. That older response suggests a white plastic liner as one way to reduce heating, but a liner must not block drainage. See the extension answer on galvanized troughs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you grow food in an old metal tub?
Do not assume every old tub is safe for edible crops—or unsafe. The available extension material does not quantify risk for a particular washtub, its former contents, metal, coating, soil, or crop. One Ask Extension response says galvanized stock tanks are safe for garden beds, while other material raises possible leaching concerns without quantified findings. Neither supports a blanket conclusion about every old container. The relevant sources are the response about galvanized stock tanks and the older response discussing galvanized troughs.
If the tub’s material, coating, or history is unknown, choose ornamentals or herbs and vegetables in a container with a known, suitable history instead. If you want to grow food in the tub, first establish what it is made of and what it previously contained; the cited guidance does not provide a test or universal rule that resolves every case.
