The Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar sold at Kmart and Target in Australia has been recalled. Stop using it immediately: fermenting fruit or vegetables stored in liquid can build up gas, causing the glass jar to break or explode or making its lid difficult to remove. The recall warns of serious laceration injuries and says injuries have occurred. Return the jar to the retailer where it was bought for a refund.
How to identify the recalled jar
The affected item is the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar, a glass jar with two compartments designed to store fruit or vegetables in liquid. Check the retailer-specific code:

The sale dates and identifiers are given in the respective Product Safety Australia recall notice, Kmart recall notice and Target recall notice. The public recall notice number is PRA2025/20458.
Why the jar was recalled
The official notice says the jar can break when used to store certain fruit or vegetables in liquid. Fermentation may produce gas that builds up inside, potentially causing the jar to explode or the lid to become difficult to remove. If the jar explodes or the lid breaks while being removed, fragments may cause serious lacerations. The recall notice states that injuries have occurred, but does not give a count.

What to do if you own one
- Stop using the jar immediately. Do not keep storing food in it or try to remove a lid that is difficult to open.
- Return it to the relevant retailer. Take it to the nearest Kmart or Target store, as applicable, for a refund. This is the remedy stated in the official recall notice.
- Contact the retailer if you cannot return it or if you sold or gave the jar to someone else. The retailer notices provide contact instructions for these situations: Kmart and Target.
This stop-use and supplier-contact approach is also consistent with the ACCC’s general recall guidance, which advises consumers to stop using recalled products and contact the supplier about an appropriate remedy.
What was reported about the fridge explosion
In a report published on 27 January 2025, PerthNow said Sally Asplin described her jar exploding in a fridge with beetroot inside and posted a photograph of the shattered jar. The report quoted her asking, “Anyone ever had one of these jars explode in your fridge.” This is an account attributed to PerthNow; the recall notice describes the general hazard and does not identify beetroot as the cause of that particular incident.
