6 Hard-to-Spot Pests That Damage Houseplants—and How to Identify Them

Sticky leaves, stippling, webbing, silvery scars, and tiny flies can hint at houseplant pests. Learn where to inspect, how to identify six common culprits, and which controls reach them.

Sticky leaves, fine webbing, silvery scars, or tiny flies near a pot can point to pests—but no single symptom proves which one is responsible. Aphids, spider mites, thrips, scale insects, mealybugs, and fungus gnats are common indoor-plant problems that can be easy to overlook. Inspect the plant closely before treating it, then choose a response that reaches the pest’s location and life stage.

How to inspect a houseplant for pests

Start by isolating a suspect plant and checking nearby plants as well. UC IPM recommends isolating indoor plants when insect, mite, or disease problems appear. Inspect plants before bringing them home or moving them indoors after time outside.

  1. Look at fresh growth, leaf undersides, stems, leaf joints, flowers, and tight crevices where insects can hide.
  2. Check the pot rim, saucer, and soil surface for insects or signs of activity.
  3. Use a hand lens if you have one. A light-colored sheet held beneath foliage can also make tiny insects easier to spot when you gently tap a stem.
  4. Match what you see to likely pests, but treat symptoms as clues—not a diagnosis. Yellowing and stippling can have several pest and non-pest causes.

UC IPM says a 10X hand lens is useful for identifying fungus gnat larvae. Its houseplant guidance also describes inspecting plants for pests and responding to infestations.

Six pests that are easy to miss

Pest Where to look Clues Useful first response
Aphids New growth and leaf undersides Clusters of small insects, sticky honeydew, cast skins, curled or distorted leaves Wash insects off where practical; consider a labeled soap or oil product if the plant tolerates it
Spider mites Leaf undersides and foliage Fine stippling, gray or bronze discoloration, fine webbing, or leaf drop Inspect closely; use a suitable wash or labeled contact product with thorough coverage
Thrips Leaf and flower crevices Silvery scarring and shiny dark specks of excrement Confirm the pest, remove badly affected material where practical, and use a labeled treatment if needed
Scale insects Stems, leaf bases, and crevices Stationary shell-like or waxy forms; soft scales may leave sticky honeydew Remove what you can and use only a product labeled for the plant and pest
Mealybugs Leaf joints and other sheltered crevices Small insects concealed in protected spots; inspect closely rather than relying on leaf damage alone Remove or wash them away where practical; follow product labeling if treating
Fungus gnats Soil surface, pot, and nearby air Small adult flies that tend to stay near pots; larvae in the growing medium Use sticky traps to monitor adults and a Bti soil treatment to target larvae

These signs are supported by UC IPM’s houseplant guidance, University of Minnesota Extension’s indoor-plant guidance, and Penn State Extension’s indoor-plant pest guidance. Honeydew can come from more than one sap-feeding pest, and stippling or yellowing may have multiple causes; confirm what is present before choosing a treatment.

Aphids: clusters on tender growth

Aphids often gather on new growth or leaf undersides. Honeydew, cast skins, and curled or distorted leaves strengthen the suspicion, but sticky leaves alone do not identify aphids. A water spray and sanitation may help; formulated insecticidal soap or horticultural oil may be options when the label permits use on that plant.

Spider mites: stippling, bronzing, and webbing

Spider mites are tiny and can be difficult to see, so look for fine stippling, gray or bronze discoloration, webbing, and sometimes leaf drop. At 75°F, UC IPM reports that mites develop from egg to adult in about two weeks; that figure applies to the stated temperature, not every indoor setting. Thorough coverage matters for contact treatments, and UC IPM recommends testing soap or oil on a small area first to check plant sensitivity.

Thrips: silvery scars and dark specks

Thrips are small, slender insects that can feed in leaf and flower crevices. Silvery scarring and shiny dark excrement can be clues. Inspect those sheltered spots and confirm the pest rather than spraying simply because leaves look pale or damaged.

Scale: stationary forms on stems and leaf bases

Scale insects can resemble fixed shells or waxy bumps, making them easy to mistake for part of the plant. Check stems, leaf bases, and crevices. Soft scales may produce honeydew. Removal, insecticidal soap, or horticultural oil may be considered when appropriate, but coverage and timing can affect results.

Mealybugs: pests tucked into crevices

Mealybugs are another common houseplant pest. Search protected joints and crevices rather than inspecting only exposed leaf surfaces. Washing or removing insects may be practical on a small infestation; if using a pesticide, follow its label for the plant and use.

Fungus gnats: distinguish adults from root-feeding larvae

The adult flies are a nuisance around plants, while larvae in the growing medium can feed on roots. Yellow sticky traps help detect or monitor flying adults, but they do not treat the larvae. Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) applied to the soil targets fungus gnat larvae. Avoiding overwatering and maintaining suitable drainage are sensible parts of plant care, but damp soil by itself does not confirm an infestation.

How to choose a proportionate treatment

Match the control to the identified pest, the plant, and where the pest is active. A measure that catches flying adults may not reach eggs or larvae on the plant or in the soil.

  • For pests you can reach: Washing foliage or removing infested material can help when the plant tolerates it and the pest is accessible.
  • For a labeled contact treatment: Formulated insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils may help against some identified pests. Check that the product is labeled for both the plant and pest, follow all directions, and provide the required coverage. Do not substitute a homemade household-soap mixture for formulated insecticidal soap.
  • For flying adults: Yellow or blue sticky traps can help detect and monitor flying pests. They are not a complete control when damaging stages remain on the plant or in the growing medium.
  • For fungus gnat larvae: Apply Bti to soil as directed; sticky traps serve a different role by monitoring adults.
  • For outdoor exposure and pesticide choices: University of Minnesota Extension warns that imidacloprid is toxic to bees and should not be used on bee-attractive plants set outdoors in summer. Follow the product label and consider where treated plants will be placed.

Some products work only when they contact the pest and have no residual activity, so one application may not eliminate an infestation. Reinspect the plant and repeat treatment only as directed on the label. UC IPM’s less-toxic insecticide guidance explains product use and precautions; its page was updated in October 2025.

When continued treatment may not be worthwhile

If an infestation is severe or the plant is badly damaged, compare the effort and risk of continued treatment with pruning or discarding the plant. That decision depends on how much healthy growth remains and whether the infestation can be contained without exposing other plants.
