16 gauge wire is the bigger conductor. It has a larger diameter and a larger cross-sectional area than 18 gauge wire, so the lower number marks the thicker wire. The size difference is measurable, but a larger wire is not automatically the right choice for a given job. Ampacity, voltage drop, insulation type, and local code all decide whether a particular gauge is appropriate.
Why the smaller number means the thicker wire
The American Wire Gauge (AWG) system runs opposite to intuition. As the conductor gets thicker, its gauge number goes down, and as it gets thinner, the number goes up. That is why 16 AWG sits between 14 AWG and 18 AWG in thickness, and 18 AWG is one of the finer sizes in common use. The AWG system is a numbering convention that has been in use for well over a century, as summarized in the Wikipedia overview of American wire gauge.
Rather than relying on the reversed numbering alone, compare the physical dimensions. The figures below are for solid copper conductors, taken from the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC, NFPA 2022 edition) Chapter 9 Table 8 as reproduced by the University of Maryland Extension.

The diameter and area values are from the 2023 NEC Chapter 9 Table 8 excerpt published by the University of Maryland Extension. The percentage and multiple in the difference column are simple arithmetic on those published figures.

What the size difference means electrically
A larger cross-section carries less resistance per unit length, and resistance is what drives voltage drop and resistive heating for a given current over a given run. The same NEC-derived table lists uncoated copper DC resistance at 75°C as 4.89 ohm/kft (16.0 ohm/km) for 16 AWG solid copper and 8.08 ohm/kft (26.5 ohm/km) for 18 AWG solid copper, both from the University of Maryland Extension reproduction.
Those values show 18 AWG has roughly 1.65 times the resistance per foot of 16 AWG. Over a long run at the same current, that gap means more voltage lost along the wire and more heat produced in it. The comparison holds only for equal length, equal material, and equal current. It does not tell you how much current either wire can safely carry, because ampacity depends on insulation temperature rating, installation conditions, and the code tables that apply.

Manufacturer data uses different test conditions, so the numbers below cannot be placed directly beside the NEC-derived 75°C values above. Southwire’s official TFN/TFFN copper specification lists DC resistance at 25°C, and its ampacities are based on 2023 NEC Table 402.5 for that specific wire type.

The same pattern holds in this product data: 16 AWG has lower resistance than 18 AWG, and stranded construction measures slightly higher than solid at the same gauge. Why “bigger” does not settle the choice
The larger gauge answers only the physical question. Choosing a wire for an actual circuit requires checking several factors together:
- Conductor material, since the figures above are for copper.
- Wire type, insulation, and temperature rating. Southwire’s TFN, TFFN, MTW, and AWM designations each have different applications and temperature conditions.
- Circuit voltage and the current or load the circuit will carry.
- Run length and the voltage drop you can accept.
- Ambient temperature, bundling, and whether the conductors sit in a raceway or enclosure, since these affect how much current is allowed.
- Overcurrent protection rated for the conductor and the circuit.
- Device instructions and the electrical code edition adopted where the work is done.
A gauge-only comparison cannot determine whether an installation is compliant. A wire that is physically larger but has the wrong insulation rating, or that is paired with protection rated for a different conductor, can still be unsuitable.

Code edition and source limits
The NEC figures cited here are from the 2023 edition. Which edition governs a project depends on the state or local jurisdiction, and the sources used for this article did not establish which edition any particular jurisdiction has adopted. Confirm the adopted edition with the local authority having jurisdiction before relying on any table.

Practical takeaway for buyers
If you are comparing 16 AWG and 18 AWG copper wire for the same circuit, the 16 AWG conductor will be physically larger and will show lower resistance per foot. Before buying, match the wire type and temperature rating to the application, confirm the overcurrent protection and device requirements, and verify the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
