A 4E error on a Samsung washer generally means the machine is not getting the water it needs to fill; Samsung also writes the code as 4C on some models. Check the supply tap, inlet hose and filter first. The exact code and instructions can vary by model, so use your washer’s manual if the display shows a variant such as 4C1, 4C2 or 4E2.
What does 4E mean on a Samsung washer?
Samsung describes 4E (also shown as 4C) as a detected problem with the water supply. Its general information-code guide groups 4C, 4E and E1 with water not being supplied. The code points to a fill or supply issue; by itself, it does not identify a failed internal part. See Samsung UK’s 4E/4C troubleshooting guide and its washer information-code list.
Codes and their meanings can differ by model and market. If your display shows 4C1, 4C2 or 4E2, check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming the variant has the same cause. Do not confuse 4E/4C with 5E/5C: Samsung maps those codes to drainage, not water supply.
How to troubleshoot a 4E error

Check the water supply tap
Stop the cycle and confirm that the tap supplying the washer is fully open. Samsung UK’s 4E guidance gives a water-pressure range of 0.5–8 bar. That is the range published in its UK guidance, not a universal threshold for every model or market.

Inspect the inlet hose
Switch off and unplug the washer before moving it to reach the rear. Check that the hose is not kinked, bent, pinched or blocked, and look for visible damage. Do not force a connection that will not move easily. Samsung US advises replacing a water-supply hose if it is damaged; a hose that is merely kinked may only need to be repositioned. Consult Samsung US water-fill troubleshooting for its guidance.

Clean the inlet mesh filter
If the hose and supply appear sound, a clogged mesh filter may be restricting water flow. Shut off the water before disconnecting the hose. Following Samsung UK’s procedure, gently remove the mesh filter, rinse it under running water, reinstall it, reconnect the hose, and restore the supply. Check the connections for leaks before running the washer. Samsung UK recommends cleaning the inlet mesh filter at least twice a year; check your model manual if the filter arrangement differs.

Check the detergent drawer
Samsung says a blocked detergent dispenser drawer can occasionally trigger 4C/4E. Remove the drawer, clear any obstruction and clean it if needed, then reinstall it.

Verify hot and cold hose connections if your washer has both
On models with separate hot and cold inlets, Samsung US says each hose must connect to its corresponding inlet. Not every washer uses the same supply arrangement, so verify the connections against the manual for your model rather than assuming it has two hoses.

Consult the manual about installation-specific checks
Some regional Samsung guidance includes drain-hose positioning and siphoning checks. These are not a universal explanation for 4E: if the supply checks do not help, use your model’s installation instructions to see whether a drain-hose check applies.

If the washer still shows 4E after the applicable checks, consult the exact model manual and contact Samsung support or arrange service. When to stop troubleshooting
- Stop if you find a damaged hose, a leaking connection or another sign that the washer’s water connections are unsafe; do not force or continue using a damaged connection.
- Do not open the washer or assume that the inlet valve, control board or another internal part has failed based only on 4E.
- For a persistent code, an unfamiliar code variant or instructions that differ from the checks above, follow the exact model manual or ask Samsung support for model-specific help.
