Most are used to reduce speed and raise output torque, but the result depends on the gear ratio, efficiency and unit ratings; torque does not increase without trade-offs. For construction equipment and other demanding machinery, choose by the required output and operating conditions—not by gear type alone.
What is a gearmotor?
A gearmotor is an integrated assembly of an electric motor and a gearbox. The motor supplies rotational power, while the gear unit transmits that power and changes the relationship between input speed and output torque. SEW-EURODRIVE describes it this way: “A gearmotor is a compact, homogeneous unit consisting of a gear unit and a motor.” Sumitomo Drive Technologies notes: “Gearmotors are made up of a motor, gear, and bearings enclosed in a housing.”
In a common speed-reducing arrangement, the output shaft turns more slowly than the motor shaft and delivers greater torque. The actual output depends on gear ratio, losses and the unit’s mechanical and thermal ratings. Not every gearmotor is used as a reducer, and no type can be assumed suitable for every load.
How does a gearmotor work?
The motor turns an input shaft connected to one or more gear stages. The gears transfer rotation to the output shaft. Their ratio determines how input speed relates to output speed; in a reducer, the lower output speed is accompanied by higher available output torque, with some power lost in the gearing. The motor, gear unit and bearings are selected as a system so the assembly can operate within its specified limits.

For a real installation, check the manufacturer’s ratings for output speed and torque as well as relevant mechanical and thermal limits. Operating pattern, service conditions and installation also matter: a load that starts, stops or experiences shocks may place different demands on the drive than a steady-running load.
Gearmotor layouts and gear types
Terms used for gearmotors describe different aspects of the product. “Parallel-shaft” and “right-angle” describe the relationship between input and output direction; “concentric” describes a layout with aligned axes. Helical, worm, bevel, planetary and cycloidal refer to gearing designs or product families. These descriptions can overlap: a right-angle unit, for example, may use worm or bevel gearing.

There is no universally best type. Compare specific manufacturer-rated models against the machine’s output needs, package constraints and operating conditions rather than treating the labels as interchangeable rankings. Gearmotors.org provides a general comparison, but its illustrative values are not universal specifications; use the relevant manufacturer’s catalog for a particular model.
Worm and planetary gearmotors
Worm and planetary identify gearing approaches, not a complete specification or an automatic verdict on suitability. When comparing them for a machine, use the manufacturers’ ratings for required output torque and speed, efficiency, noise, mounting and envelope. Check backdrivability where it matters, and determine whether the product’s thermal or mechanical limit governs the application. A type name by itself does not establish those answers.

Choose by output direction and package
First determine where the machine needs its output shaft and how the motor can fit. Compare parallel-shaft, right-angle or concentric layouts against the available space, shaft arrangement, mounting type and position. Then compare the gear mechanism and model ratings against the load and duty; layout alone does not tell you whether a unit can meet the machine’s torque or speed requirement.
Where gearmotors are used
Gearmotors are used to drive conveyor lines, lift or lower loads, and move goods in industrial production. Sumitomo Drive Technologies lists parcel handling, mining, and food and beverage among its application sectors. Danfoss describes beverage-handling uses such as moving bottles, containers and crates. These examples illustrate common kinds of work, not a guarantee that any particular gearmotor is suitable for a given machine or load.

How to compare and specify a unit
- Translate the machine’s needs into output requirements. Define the required speed and torque at the gearmotor output, and document motor power, input speed and load behavior.
- Check fit and operating conditions. Confirm shaft direction, mounting, envelope, power supply, duty cycle and environment against the installation.
- Compare rated models, not just gear types. Review manufacturer catalog limits and service factors for the intended application. Consider efficiency, noise and backdrivability if they matter to the machine, and establish whether thermal or mechanical capacity is the controlling limit.
- Verify installation requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the selected unit and mounting position. For industrial service or an uncertain load, consult the manufacturer’s catalog or application engineering support.
For a small project, an “electric gear motor” listing is only a starting point: verify that its voltage, output speed and torque, shaft arrangement and duty cycle match the application. For industrial machinery, a generic listing without model-specific ratings is not enough to establish suitability.
