The Gerber Stakeout Spark combines a folding plier-based camping multitool with an integrated ferro rod. Its saw serves as the striker, so the tool can produce sparks for fire-starting without a separate striker. The design brings fire-starting together with camp tasks such as pulling tent stakes, cutting and opening bottles.
How the Stakeout Spark’s fire starter works
The tool pairs a ferro rod with a saw that doubles as its striker. Scraping the striker against the rod produces sparks; New Atlas describes the fire starter as useful for lighting a backpacking stove or starting a fire, but that is a product description rather than an independently verified performance test. What tools and features are included?
The documented set includes needle-nose and standard pliers, wire cutters, a plain-edge blade, a saw/ferro-rod striker, a tent stake puller, an awl, a bottle opener and a ruler. It also has an integrated ferro rod and a carabiner. The overall design folds in a butterfly-style plier format.
How it differs from the standard Stakeout
New Atlas reported that the Stakeout Spark joined Gerber’s Stakeout camping-tool line, with the original Stakeout remaining in the lineup at the time of its February 2025 article. The Spark’s defining addition is the ferro-rod fire starter, while its pliers distinguish it from the standard Stakeout’s scissors, tweezers and file, which New Atlas says are absent from the Spark. That makes the Spark a more natural fit for someone who values pliers and integrated fire-starting over those smaller tools.

Combining the rod and striker with the multitool means fewer separate pieces to pack for camp. In return, the Spark’s usefulness depends on whether its included tools match your needs: compare its pliers and fire starter with the scissors, tweezers and file on the standard Stakeout, or with a separate fire-starting kit. New Atlas’s author also expressed a personal dislike of the fixed carabiner; that is an individual preference, not a reported consensus.
