To dim from both locations, use a matched multi-location system—typically one master dimmer and its specified companion control.
Why two switches controlling one light are different
In conventional wiring, two switches that control the same light from separate locations form a 3-way circuit. The switches are not interchangeable with a pair of standard single-pole controls: a 3-way circuit uses different terminals and wiring arrangements.
More importantly, two devices labeled “dimmer” are not necessarily designed to work together. Lutron explains that a multi-location setup uses one master dimmer or switch with one or more companion controls, and that two master controls cannot control the same load. How to dim from both locations
Choose a multi-location dimmer system whose instructions specify the exact controls that can be paired. Depending on the model, the second location may use a companion dimmer, a remote control, or a conventional mechanical 3-way switch. Follow the instructions for the exact dimmer; appearance or brand alone does not establish compatibility.

Example: Lutron Maestro with MA-R
For the documented Lutron Maestro arrangement, use one Maestro dimmer and one MA-R companion dimmer for two-location control. Lutron says to use only one Maestro dimmer in a multi-location circuit; other locations use the specified companion control. See Lutron’s Maestro multi-location installation guidance. This pairing is an example, not a rule for other product families or brands.
Other product-specific arrangements
Some dimmers are designed to work with a standard mechanical 3-way switch, while others require a companion. Lutron’s product FAQs describe different arrangements by model family. Its Dalia guidance, for example, allows only one Dalia dimmer in a 3-way application and calls for a standard mechanical switch at the other location; that is specific to Dalia. Leviton’s VPI06 instructions describe a separate dimmer-and-remote arrangement in which the remote turns the light on at the brightness selected at the dimmer. Neither example means that two arbitrary dimmers can be paired. Check the current instructions for the exact devices. What to verify before choosing a dimmer
“Dimmer” alone is not enough to determine whether two controls will work together. Confirm the following in the selected model’s current documentation:
- The exact compatible dimmer and companion or remote model numbers.
- Whether the intended setup allows dimming at both locations or only at the master dimmer.
- Compatibility with the light’s load type and the specific lamps installed, including LED lamps where applicable.
- Required neutral or other wiring connections, and which locations may use each device.
- Whether the diagram matches the actual circuit in the home.
The manufacturer materials cited here do not establish a universal cross-brand compatibility rule or a complete comparison of lamp compatibility. Do not assume that controls from different product families—or even two controls from one brand—can be combined.

Safety and installation limits
Electrical work should follow the exact product instructions and the wiring found at the site. Lutron’s installation guidance says to turn off power at the circuit breaker or remove the fuse, then verify that power is off before proceeding. Its two-location identification instructions describe identifying and tagging the wire connected to the differently colored or COMMON terminal. See Lutron’s installation guide.
Do not identify a conductor by insulation color alone or connect wires based on a generic diagram. If you cannot confidently identify the common and traveler conductors, the wiring does not match the product diagram, or you are unsure that the circuit is de-energized, stop and consult a qualified electrician. A product manual is not a substitute for confirming the wiring in a particular home.
