Soil in the basin contaminates bathing water, so a planted bowl is no longer a working birdbath. To keep both flowers and a usable water source, leave the basin clear and plant around its base instead.
Choose what the birdbath will do
Before decorating, empty the bath and inspect the bowl, pedestal, joints and base. Look for cracks, loose sections, sharp edges, corrosion and wobble. Then choose the feature that fits its condition and your garden:
- Working birdbath: Keep the basin clean, shallow and accessible; refresh its setting with nearby planting or a border.
- Planter: Provide drainage before adding growing medium, and use plants suited to a shallow bowl.
- Decorative feature: If it will not hold water or plants, use it as a focal point only if the support is sound and the ornament will not make it unstable.
Do not add soil, water or a heavy ornament to an unstable pedestal. A cracked bowl may be unsuitable for holding water, but could still work as a planter if the whole feature is stable and drains.
Keep it as a birdbath and refresh the surroundings
Make the water accessible
Birds need shallow water with a gentle slope or shallow landing area. Cornell Lab of Ornithology notes that traditional concrete baths may be too deep and glazed surfaces can be slippery; the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) describes a shallow, watertight dish with a maximum depth of about 10 cm. A few securely placed pebbles can create shallower spots, provided they do not crowd the basin or make it hard to clean.

Choose a visible, manageable location
Place the bath where birds can see approaching danger, without putting it so close to dense cover that predators can hide beside it. If the pedestal is awkward in its current spot, moving it into a flower border can make it feel intentional while keeping the basin open. Plant around the base or nearby, not in the water. Leave enough access to change water and clean the bowl.
Clean according to the material
Change the water every one to two days, as Michigan State University Extension advises, and clean the basin regularly. Cleaning instructions differ by material: University of Florida IFAS Extension recommends soap and warm water for concrete baths, while Michigan State describes a dilute distilled-white-vinegar method. Rinse thoroughly and follow guidance appropriate to the bath’s material. Avoid oils or unverified additives; some can interfere with birds’ feather waterproofing.

Convert the basin into a planter
Set up drainage before planting
Birdbath bowls are made to hold water and often have no drainage. The simplest way to avoid altering the original basin is to set a pot with drainage holes inside it. Check that the pot fits securely and that excess water can escape rather than pooling in the bowl.
Drilling holes at the basin’s lowest point is another option only if the material and condition are suitable. It can crack a fragile bowl, and not every birdbath can be drilled safely. If you are unsure about the material or its integrity, use a fitted pot instead. Do not plant directly into a basin intended to provide clean bird water: soil will contaminate the water, and the planted basin will no longer function as a birdbath.

Match plants to the bowl and site
A shallow basin is a better starting point for shallow-rooted choices than for plants needing deep soil. Succulents and sedums, low annuals, and alpine or rock-garden plants are examples suggested for birdbath planters; avoid deep-rooted plants. Suitability depends on local climate, sunlight, basin depth and each plant’s water needs, so choose accordingly and use growing medium suited to the plants.
Planting adds weight. If the filled feature would be difficult or unsafe to move, position it in its final location before filling it. Check the pedestal and base can support the added load, and preserve access for watering and any drainage.

Consider moving water only if you can maintain it
A small floating solar fountain can add movement to a birdbath, but it is optional and does not replace cleaning or water checks. Pump instructions vary: an older National Audubon Society leaflet says its pump must be submerged at startup and should not run dry. Follow the current instructions for the specific pump, keep debris clear as directed, and check that the water level remains adequate.

Whichever purpose you choose, the makeover should suit the structure as well as the look. Before leaving the feature in place, check that the base sits securely, the bowl or insert is stable, and nearby planting does not block access. Keep a birdbath basin clear if birds are meant to use it; keep drainage and load in mind if it is a planter. Those choices let an old pedestal become a deliberate garden feature without asking it to serve incompatible purposes.
