Transparent solar panels—usually photovoltaic glazing built into windows, skylights, curtain walls or façades—do not have a reliable universal price. The products documented for buildings are generally specified for individual projects, so the installed cost depends on the glazing, design and electrical integration. Their main trade-offs are lower electricity generation than conventional solar panels, added construction complexity, and the need to balance power output with daylight and window performance.
What do transparent solar panels cost?
No broadly applicable price for transparent photovoltaic glazing is published in the sources cited here. ClearVue Technologies describes its Solar Vision Glass as bespoke glazing available in different sizes and configurations, and directs specifiers to its technical team for project-specific information. A price comparison therefore needs a current quote for the actual building, not a generic per-window or per-square-foot estimate.
For context—not as a solar-window price—the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2025Q1 benchmark for a representative 250 kW commercial rooftop system lists the following conventional PV costs. The figures are in 2024 U.S. dollars:
| System type | Minimum sustainable price (MSP) | Modeled market price (MMP) |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial rooftop PV only | $1.95/Wdc | $1.98/Wdc |
| Commercial rooftop PV plus storage | $2.96/Wdc | $2.98/Wdc |
These are benchmarks for conventional U.S. rooftop systems, not photovoltaic glazing. See the DOE solar photovoltaic system cost benchmarks for the definitions and system assumptions.

What to include in a project quote
Ask the supplier and design team to separate the cost of the solar glazing from the conventional window specification and to identify the full installed scope. Include glazing construction and dimensions, façade or roof integration, electrical balance-of-system work, design and permitting, local labor, and energy modeling. Compare the solar-glazing option with the cost of the regular high-performance window plus an alternative such as rooftop or canopy PV.
Do not assume a generic payback period. The calculation depends on factors including façade orientation and shading, available area, climate, electricity tariff, the window being replaced, thermal performance, installation scope and product lifetime. A 2022 NREL report on zero-energy windows notes that acceptable window price premiums depend on technology performance, potential building energy savings and the owner’s financial requirements; those general window premiums are not a price for PV glazing. NREL’s Pathway to Zero Energy Windows report discusses those market considerations.
What are the disadvantages and practical limits?
Lower electricity generation than conventional panels
Photovoltaic glazing competes with ordinary windows for the same building surface, but it generally generates less electricity than conventional rooftop or utility-scale PV. NREL researchers identify that lower generation as a barrier to the economics of photovoltaic windows. Treat glazing as one possible source of supplementary generation, not as an automatic replacement for a building’s rooftop solar potential. The findings are system-level concerns, not proof that every project will perform poorly. NREL’s discussion of photovoltaic windows in commercial buildings covers these deployment challenges.

This 200W solar panel is ideal for Class B vans, RVs, marine applications, rooftops and other space-conscious off-grid solar systems. Pre-drilled mounting holes make installation with compatible mounting hardware straightforward.
Construction integration, durability and replacement
Solar glazing must be coordinated with the building envelope, electrical design and construction schedule. NREL identifies integration-related soft costs and slower return on investment as barriers. Durability matters especially because replacing façade or window glazing can be disruptive and expensive. A warranty is useful information, but it does not by itself establish the system’s annual output or the economics of a specific building.
Daylight and thermal performance are part of the trade-off
A solar window is still a window: its visible light transmittance (VLT), view, U-value and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) affect daylight, heating and cooling as well as electricity generation. Products can differ in transparency, tint, cell pattern and glazing build. The 2026 study Energy impact of transparent photovoltaic windows models these variables for commercial products and treats the studied products as supplementary generation in its modeled case. That result is specific to the study’s products and assumptions; it should not be generalized to every building, climate or product.
Product specifications are not a building energy forecast
As published on its product page, ClearVue lists Solar Vision Glass specifications of up to 80% VLT, subject to coating, and output up to 70 Wp/m². The company also lists a 30-year performance warranty and a 12-year product warranty. These are manufacturer-published product specifications and warranty terms, not independent comparative findings or a forecast of annual generation for a particular façade. ClearVue also describes multiple glazing configurations and variable U-value and SHGC ranges. See the manufacturer’s Solar Vision Glass information and request the specification relevant to the proposed configuration.

How to compare solar glazing with other building options
Evaluate the glazing and the building as a whole, using the same assumptions for every option. Ask the project team or supplier to provide:
- Visible light transmittance and a description of view quality, tint and cell pattern.
- Rated electrical output per square metre and modeled annual yield for the actual orientation, shading and site conditions.
- U-value and SHGC for the proposed glass build, alongside the daylight and heating or cooling implications.
- The baseline window specification and whether the work is new construction, façade renewal or retrofit.
- Installed glazing cost, electrical integration, design and permitting, maintenance, and the disruption and cost of eventual replacement.
- Applicable certifications, product and performance warranties, and relevant demonstrated project history.
- A comparison against ordinary high-performance glazing paired with rooftop or canopy PV, where those alternatives are feasible.
Solar glazing and conventional rooftop PV are different technologies. Rooftop PV can provide a useful economic comparison, but it is not a transparent product substitute. Solar-control window film is also different: it can alter solar heat or light entering through a window, but it does not itself generate electricity.
