A stylish garden starts with how you want to use it, then takes shape around the site you actually have: its light, soil, drainage, water supply and climate. These 13 design directions—from a minimal courtyard to a wildlife-friendly retreat—are practical starting points, not a ranking of the season’s most popular looks. The planting advice below draws mainly on UK guidance from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS); check local conditions before choosing plants elsewhere.
How do I choose a garden design that suits my space?
Start by deciding what the garden needs to do: provide somewhere to relax or dine, make room for play, grow food, support wildlife, or combine several uses. Sketch the permanent elements—paths, seating, borders and paved or decked areas—before choosing plants. The RHS recommends planning a modern garden as a whole, with hard landscaping considered before planting: RHS modern and minimalist garden guidance.
Before settling on a style, note the conditions that will shape it. Track which areas get sun or shade, check how quickly soil drains, and consider how much water and maintenance you can provide. A plant that suits a sunny, dry border may struggle in a damp site or a colder winter. The RHS offers further guidance on choosing plants for different places.
- Use: Which activities need dedicated space?
- Site: What are the light, soil, drainage and water conditions?
- Space: Can vertical surfaces or containers add useful growing room?
- Upkeep: How much pruning, watering and seasonal replanting suits your routine?
- Feel: Do you want year-round structure, seasonal colour, wildlife value or a calmer place to spend time?
What are some modern garden design ideas?
1. Modern minimal courtyard
Use crisp lines, repeated patterns and a restrained colour and planting palette to make a compact courtyard feel composed. Decide on paving, paths and other permanent features alongside the planting plan; a limited palette can look intentional, but still needs plants suited to the site.

2. Formal geometry
Build the layout around symmetry, geometric beds and a focal point such as a specimen plant or feature. A clear floor plan can bring order to a garden of any size; adjust the scale of beds and paths to preserve usable space.
3. Cottage abundance
Combine dense, colourful and scented planting with informal edges and paths that weave through the garden. The look depends on a generous planting effect, so scale the density to the space and leave enough room to walk, sit and tend the beds.
4. Mediterranean gravel garden
Use gravel between plants suited to relatively dry conditions, such as lavender, rosemary, olive or vines where the climate allows. In cool or wet regions, check winter hardiness and drainage carefully: some Mediterranean plants dislike winter wet and may need protection. The RHS explains the approach in its Mediterranean garden guide.

8. Container kitchen garden
Grow edible plants in pots placed where you can reach, monitor and water them easily. Containers make it simpler to manage soil and replace annual crops through the growing season; choose pot dimensions and drainage to suit the plants rather than assuming one container works for everything. The RHS covers growing vegetables in containers.
9. Low-lawn or lawn-free retreat
If you do not need a lawn for play or other uses, consider giving more space to borders and creating a manageable sitting area with paving, gravel or decking. Permeable paving options are available, but select a surface with the site’s drainage and intended use in mind.

How can I make a small garden look stylish?
Give the space a clear purpose and use its height as well as its floor. Vertical planting, hanging baskets and tiered pots can add greenery without taking over a path or seating area. A limited palette, repeated shapes or a focal point can make the layout feel intentional, while containers offer flexibility for edible plants or site-specific planting. Keep access, light and watering in mind so the arrangement remains usable as it grows.
How can I make a garden low maintenance?
Reduce recurring work by matching plants to the site and choosing a structure that does not depend on constant seasonal attention. Hardy shrubs and evergreens can provide lasting form; groundcover can knit beds together and help suppress weeds. Planting fewer varieties in greater numbers can simplify care. Larger containers generally dry out more slowly than small patio pots, though every container still needs watering appropriate to its plants and weather. The RHS discusses low-maintenance garden design.
Choose surfaces and borders with the garden’s use in mind. For example, reducing lawn may save mowing if a lawn is not needed, but replacing it with another surface does not remove all upkeep. Plan for the maintenance you can realistically provide rather than relying on a no-care promise.
What plants work in a sunny, dry garden?
Start with plants suited to both the exposure and the soil’s drainage. The RHS gives lavender in sunny, dry soil as an example and lists rosemary, olive and vines among plants used for Mediterranean-style gardens. These are not universal prescriptions: winter wet can harm some Mediterranean plants, and local cold tolerance matters. Check each plant’s needs and your region’s climate before planting. For a broader guide, see the RHS on plants for different places.
