A clear, faceted prism is the option to consider if you want sunlight to split into rainbow-like reflections. The effect depends on direct sunlight reaching the prism; it will vary with the window, surroundings, and time of day. Colored or stained-glass panel
A colored panel is primarily window decor that filters light through its material. Check the listing to find out whether it is glass, acrylic, or another material: a stained-glass appearance does not necessarily mean the panel is made from glass. For example, one product listing describes a panel made from UV-resistant acrylic with a printed stained-glass effect. Materials also vary by maker; Etta Kostick Designs identifies glass and lead-free solder in its own work.
Craft-made options
If you would rather make one, the Nuffield Foundation’s stained-glass resource describes sun catchers hung so sunlight passes through glass. It is an educational activity, not product guidance or a safety standard.

What to check before buying
- Material: Read the item description and inspect the photos. Distinguish glass or crystal from printed acrylic, and do not assume that a product label alone establishes the material.
- Desired effect: Choose a faceted prism for the possibility of spectral reflections in direct sun; choose a colored panel for light-through-material window decor. The two effects are not interchangeable.
- Size and weight: Consider the available window area and the strength of the intended mounting point. A seller suggests proportioning size to the display location, but no universal size formula or load rating is established.
- Hardware and use conditions: Check what hardware is included, where the piece attaches, its weight guidance, and whether the maker specifies indoor or outdoor use. Do not assume an indoor glass ornament is suitable outdoors.
- Care: Follow the instructions for that specific material and finish; cleaning directions for one maker’s glass work may not apply to acrylic or another product.
Find the right spot in the window
Observe the intended window at the time you want to see the effect before choosing a final position. A sunny window is important for a prism’s rainbow-like reflections. One seller recommends south- or west-facing windows for more direct sun, but orientation is only a clue: neighboring buildings, trees, overhangs, and the room’s layout affect the light that actually reaches the glass.
Also consider how the piece will sit in the space and whether it might be bumped, caught in a curtain, or exposed to moisture. A retailer advises matching the piece’s size to its intended location, but the right fit depends on the window and the object rather than a universal measurement.

Hang it with hardware suited to its weight
- Check the maker’s instructions and attachment point. Identify the piece’s weight, hanging loop or other attachment, and any supplied hardware before choosing a hook.
- Match the mount to the surface. Etta Kostick Designs recommends a small hook or nail secured into wood, such as a window frame or ceiling beam, for its glass pieces. Follow the item’s own directions and use a mounting point appropriate to its mass and the surface.
- Be cautious with suction hooks. Suction-based options are listed by some sellers, but suction can weaken or release. Etta Kostick Designs cautions against suction cups for heavier pieces, and DOBI Designs warns that inexpensive suction hooks may lose suction, potentially dropping and breaking a fragile ornament. Do not treat a suction cup as suitable for every weight, window, or surface.
- Confirm the piece hangs securely. Once installed, check that the attachment is stable and that the suncatcher is not likely to strike the glass or be knocked by nearby movement.
Possible display options vary by item and location. DOBI Designs’ FAQ lists cup hooks, window hardware, molding hooks, stands, and strong suction hooks; these are seller-specific suggestions, not a guarantee that every option will safely support every suncatcher.

Care depends on material and finish. For its indoor glass suncatchers, Etta Kostick Designs recommends gently wiping the glass with a soft cloth and non-ammonia household glass cleaner, avoiding abrasive materials and cleaning the metalwork, and keeping the piece indoors and away from moisture because exposure may damage the finish. These directions are specific to that maker’s glass items; use the instructions supplied with your own suncatcher.
