How to Transform a Sloped Yard with a Terrace Garden Design

A successful terrace garden starts with the slope’s soil, water, sun, and access. Compare planting pockets and full terraces, then plan drainage, walls, and plants for the site.

A terrace garden can turn a sloped yard into a series of easier-to-use planting areas, but the right design starts with the slope’s soil, water flow, sun, and access—not with a wall material. First assess the site, then choose between planting directly on the slope, making small planting pockets, or building terraces. Plan drainage and safe circulation before construction, and select plants for the different conditions across the hillside.

Start by assessing the slope and site

Before drawing terrace lines, measure how much the ground rises over a horizontal distance and observe how water behaves. Note where runoff enters, where it pools, and whether channels or gullies are forming. Check soil, sun and shade, wind exposure, existing vegetation, and moisture differences between the top and bottom of the slope.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offers general planting guidance: slopes below 5% usually have few special planting considerations; slopes around 8–16% call for special consideration; and slopes of 20% or more are steep. It also says slopes around 30% or greater are often too steep to mow, while 50% is often considered the steepest slope that can support plant growth. These are gardening guidelines, not engineering thresholds or a substitute for a site-specific assessment. Iowa State Extension: Gardening on Slopes and Hillsides

  • Look for runoff from roofs, driveways, or higher ground that reaches the slope.
  • Check whether water runs off before soaking in, or whether the foot of the slope stays wetter than the upper areas.
  • Identify existing plants worth retaining and areas of exposed or eroding soil.
  • Consider how people will reach each future bed to water, weed, prune, and maintain it.

Choose how much of the slope to reshape

Terracing is one option, not a requirement for every hillside. The best approach depends on how much level space you need, the slope and soil conditions, water movement, and the construction and maintenance demands you can accommodate.

Approach Level space Construction and drainage Planting and access
Plant directly on the slope Does not create a broad level area. Can avoid terrace walls, but runoff and exposed soil still need attention. Use plants and ground cover suited to the site; consider access for care on the incline.
Make small planting pockets Creates localized planting areas around individual plants. Smaller interventions than full terraces; still assess how water moves through the slope. Iowa State Extension suggests making an individual planting terrace two to three times wider than the plant’s root ball. This is a planting-pocket guideline, not a general terrace-width rule.
Build terraces with retaining structures Can create flatter planting areas or usable zones. Requires a site-appropriate wall design and planned drainage; scope and local requirements vary. Can provide defined beds and level areas, but plan maintenance access and circulation between levels.

A cut-and-fill layout removes soil from the upper side of a terrace and uses it to fill the lower side. Other options described by extension and county guidance include retaining walls made with modular blocks, boulders, field stone, brick, timber, gabion baskets, or poured concrete. The materials are not interchangeable; suitability depends on the design and site. For a smaller intervention, planting terraces around individual plants can create flatter pockets without reshaping the entire hillside. Mississippi State Extension: How to Terrace a Sloping Garden

Plan drainage, walls, and erosion control together

A retaining wall is not simply decorative garden edging. Snohomish County states, “A drainage system is a necessary component of retaining wall design.” Water and soil pressure behind a wall affect its design, so drainage needs to be planned as part of the wall and terrace layout—not added as an afterthought. Local planning requirements and permits vary. Snohomish County: Retaining Walls

For a larger terrace project, consult qualified help. Snohomish County recommends assistance from a landscape architect or licensed civil or geotechnical engineer for terrace planning and permit applications. Mississippi State Extension advises homeowners who build their own walls to keep them roughly one or two feet high and to consult a landscape architect for large walls. That is source-specific guidance, not a universal legal limit or engineering rule. Check local ordinances and building codes before work begins.

Reduce water reaching or flowing down the slope where practical. Iowa State Extension describes redirecting runoff from driveways and downspouts at the top of a hill, and identifies small trenches, drainage tile, or surface drains as possible ways to keep excess water off a hillside. A professional can help determine what is appropriate for the site and where redirected water can safely go.

  • Plant across the slope or along its contours to slow surface water.
  • Cover bare soil with plants or mulch to help limit erosion.
  • Consider temporary wattles or erosion-control blankets while new plants establish.
  • When using a blanket, pin it tightly to the soil; Iowa State Extension identifies landscape staples as one option.

See Iowa State Extension’s slope and erosion guidance for additional planting and runoff considerations.

Design safe access before finalizing the planting beds

Plan paths and transitions between levels at the same time as the terraces. Think through how residents and maintenance workers will reach every area, move tools, water plants, and manage routine care. If a level terrace will serve as a patio or gathering space, it needs a stable, level surface and safe access. The available extension and county guidance does not establish a universal step layout or patio specification; those details should be designed for the property and applicable local requirements.

Choose plants for each part of the hillside

Conditions can change significantly from the top of a slope to its base. Select plants for the actual sun, soil, moisture, and exposure at each planting area rather than assuming the whole hillside shares one microclimate. A slope can shed water quickly, while its lower areas may remain wetter.

Groundcovers can help cover exposed soil. A layered planting might combine trees or shrubs with perennials and groundcovers below, provided each plant suits its location. Avoid bare stretches where runoff could wash soil away, and consider arranging planting across contours to slow water. For a planting pocket around an individual plant, Iowa State Extension recommends a terrace two to three times wider than the root ball; that measurement applies to the individual planting context only.

What to settle before construction

  • Layout: Decide whether the goal is planted slope, localized planting pockets, or level terraces.
  • Water: Trace incoming runoff and determine how the design will manage water at and behind any wall.
  • Structure: Match wall materials and construction to the slope, soil, water conditions, and intended use.
  • Access: Plan how people will safely reach and maintain each level.
  • Local requirements: Check planning rules, permits, and building codes with the relevant local authority.
  • Planting: Choose ground cover and other plants for the sun, soil, moisture, and exposure in each area.
