Toro offers walk-behind mowers, 60V battery walk mowers and zero-turn riders; Honda’s cited lineup centers on gas and battery walk-behind mowers. A rider and a walk-behind are not substitutes, and the available manufacturer specifications do not establish a universal winner for cut quality, reliability or value.
Start by matching the mower to the job
Before comparing brands, decide whether you need a walk-behind mower or a riding mower. Toro’s TimeCutter 77401 is a zero-turn rider, while the representative Toro Recycler and Honda HRX examples are walk-behind mowers. Compare the TimeCutter with other riders, not with a push or self-propelled mower.
For a walk-behind, assess lawn area and layout, slopes and obstacles, how often you mow, and whether you need to mulch, bag, discharge clippings or handle leaves. Then choose between gas and battery power. Toro’s cited range includes 60V walk mowers; Honda’s cited lineup includes battery-powered HRN, HRX and HRC models as well as gas models. The cited product pages do not establish a universal runtime or total-cost winner for battery versus gas.
Representative gas walk-behind models
The Toro Recycler 21485 and Honda HRX217VKA are useful examples for narrowing a search, not a controlled head-to-head test. Their published specifications describe different features, and neither manufacturer page proves that one cuts better or lasts longer.

| Model | Manufacturer-stated details | What to compare for your property |
|---|---|---|
| Toro Recycler 21485 | Toro lists a 22-inch gas mower with Personal Pace and SmartStow. Its product page summarizes a five-year limited warranty and a guaranteed-to-start warranty. Toro Recycler 21485 | Deck width, drive feel, storage space, clipping-handling setup, exact warranty terms and local dealer support. |
| Honda HRX217VKA | Honda lists a 21-inch self-propelled gas mower with a GCV200 engine and 4-in-1 Versamow system. Honda mower lineup | Deck width, Select Drive, mulching, bagging, discharge and leaf handling, current price and availability, warranty and service access. |
The stated widths—22 inches for the Toro listing and 21 inches for the Honda listing—are manufacturer specifications, not evidence of mowing speed or cut quality. Confirm the exact trim and included equipment on the listing you plan to buy.
When a Toro zero-turn rider is the relevant comparison
If your property and workload call for a rider, Toro’s TimeCutter 77401 is a different category of option from either walk-behind example. Toro lists a three-year, unlimited-hours residential limited warranty for this model, subject to the model’s written warranty terms. The page also gives separate commercial engine terms. Toro TimeCutter 77401
For a rider, compare the lawn’s area and obstacles, deck and engine configuration, intended residential or commercial use, and access to service. Do not infer from a walk-behind comparison that either brand is better for riding mowers.

Choose gas or battery based on your routine
For either brand, compare the exact mower and the complete package rather than treating “battery” as a single specification. Check whether the battery and charger are included, how charging fits your schedule, where you will store the equipment, and whether the model is in stock locally. The cited Toro 60V and Honda battery pages identify product families, but do not establish a universal runtime, price or ownership-cost comparison. Toro 60V mowers · Honda battery mowers
Compare warranty and ownership support by exact model
Warranty terms depend on the series, model, use and applicable written document. For Honda products manufactured on or after April 1, 2023, Honda’s warranty document lists 36 months of private-residential coverage for HRN and 60 months for HRX. For both series, it lists three months for commercial, rental and institutional use. Check the document for conditions and the terms applicable to the specific product. Honda power equipment warranty
Toro’s warranty document makes coverage subject to routine maintenance specified in the operator’s manual, and its table distinguishes products and use categories. The Recycler and TimeCutter pages show different model-specific summaries, so do not apply one Toro mower’s warranty to the entire brand. Read the written warranty for the model and use you are considering. Toro warranty information

- VERSATILE 3-IN-1 SYSTEM: Choose between mulching, rear bagging, or rear discharge to match changing lawn conditions.
- EASY HEIGHT CHANGES: Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.

Honda’s recall page describes a September 2023 decompressor-system recall covering specified HRN and HRX serial ranges. Honda says many mowers within the listed ranges are not affected. If you own or are considering a used Honda mower, enter its frame serial number in Honda’s checker rather than relying on the model name alone. Honda recall information and serial-number checker
So, which mower should you get?
- Choose between walk-behind models if that is the right format for your lawn; compare the Toro Recycler 21485 and Honda HRX217VKA as examples, then verify the exact features, price, warranty and local availability.
- Consider a Toro TimeCutter only if a zero-turn rider fits the job; compare it with other riders rather than with Honda walk-behinds.
- Choose gas or battery after checking your mowing routine, charging or fueling needs, included hardware and storage.
- Favor the model you can support with a suitable local servicing dealer, accessible parts and clear warranty terms for your intended use.
Manufacturer product descriptions and warranty documents support these model and ownership comparisons, but do not provide independent comparative test results establishing a brand winner for reliability, cut quality, satisfaction or value.
