For a backpacking stove that runs on white gas, the strongest current choices from MSR are four liquid-fuel models: the WhisperLite, the WhisperLite International, the WhisperLite Universal and the XGK EX. Pick by fuel access and trip type, not by a single ranking. The figures below are manufacturer and retailer specifications, plus one 2022 safety guide’s comparison table. They are not results from a controlled head-to-head test, and we could not confirm a fifth model with current, comparable specifications, so this is a four-stove shortlist rather than a five-stove ranking.
How this shortlist was built
- Included: current MSR liquid-fuel stoves whose weight, fuel list and boil figures are published by MSR, REI Co-op or the International Polar Guides Association (IPGA).
- Specifications, not test results: each maker states boil and burn times under its own conditions. Compare these numbers only within the same source, never across brands.
- Excluded: any stove for which we could not verify a current specification page. That is why the MSR DragonFly is discussed separately below rather than ranked.
Specifications at a glance
| Model | Minimum weight | Packaged weight | Fuels named | 1 L boil, white gas | Fuel bottle included |

The WhisperLite International and XGK EX also appear in the same IPGA comparison table, which is the only place this shortlist compares two stoves under one set of stated conditions:
| IPGA measure (2022) | XGK EX | WhisperLite International |
|---|---|---|
| Burn time per 600 ml of white gas | 109 min | 155 min |
| Boil time per 1 L | 3.5 min | 3.5 min |
| Litres boiled per 100 ml of white gas | 4.9 L | 4.4 L |
IPGA states these as the figures in its table, not as current standardized test results. The source is its Stove Safety Management Recommendations, document version VER080922.
The four models
MSR WhisperLite: the single-fuel choice
The WhisperLite is MSR’s dedicated white-gas option. Its published minimum weight is 11.5 oz (326 g) and its packaged weight is 15.2 oz (431 g), with dimensions of 6 x 4 x 4 in. Per the MSR product page, it boils 1 L in 3.9 minutes on white gas, burns for 136 minutes on 600 ml (20 oz) of white gas, and boils 5.1 L of water per 100 ml of white gas. It suits trips where you can buy white gas at every resupply point. Its packaged weight is the highest of the four models here, and MSR’s package information does not list a fuel bottle, so confirm what is in the box before you buy.
#1 Best Overall
- Multiple included fuel injectors allow the stove to burn white gas, kerosene, or even unleaded auto fuel
- Lightweight stainless steel legs are stamped to offer excellent stability and weight savings
- Compact design folds small and fits inside most MSR pots
- Self-cleaning Shaker Jet technology and one-piece leg assembly allow fast cleaning and maintenance in the field
- Includes fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small-parts kit, instructions, and PFAS-free stuff sack. (Fuel bottle not included)
MSR WhisperLite International: multi-fuel with a pump
The International adds kerosene and unleaded auto fuel to white gas. REI lists 11.2 oz for the stove and pump, 14.9 oz packaged, and boil times of 3 min 30 sec on white gas and 4 min 24 sec on kerosene. The stove needs an MSR fuel bottle, which REI says is not included, so budget for it separately and verify that the bottle fits. The leg assembly is a one-piece stamped stainless-steel part, and the burner is cleaned with a Shaker Jet. In its 2025 expert guide, REI describes white gas liquid-fuel use as helpful in sub-freezing conditions and on fuel-intensive trips, with the trade-offs of greater weight and possible soot compared with canister stoves. Product details are on REI’s WhisperLite International page.
MSR WhisperLite Universal: canister or liquid fuel
The Universal accepts white gas, kerosene, unleaded gasoline and compatible canister fuel. MSR lists 11.2 oz (318 g) minimum and 14.9 oz (423 g) packaged, with 1 L boil times of 3.5 minutes on white gas, 4.4 minutes on kerosene and 3.75 minutes on MSR IsoPro canister fuel. MSR positions it for buyers who want canister convenience and simmering, with liquid-fuel options for longer, colder or international trips. It is the most flexible choice here if you may switch between canisters and liquid fuel. Full specifications are on the MSR product page for the WhisperLite Universal.
Rank #2
- Lightweight aluminum mixer tube, extra-stable stainless steel legs and refined design keep weight to a minimum
- Patent pending AirControl technology creates the optimal fuel/air mix for top-notch performance with canister fuel, white gas, kerosene and unleaded gasoline
- Canister liquid feed delivers better cold weather and low-fuel performance with a more consistent output over the life of each canister. Canister stand included
- Liquid and canister fuel couplers pair with fuel-specific jets for quick and easy transitions
- Self-cleaning Shaker Jet technology and redesigned leg assembly facilitate fast cleaning and easy maintenance in the field
MSR XGK EX: the expedition multi-fuel stove
MSR positions the XGK EX as a multi-liquid-fuel expedition stove, highlighting field maintenance, a Shaker Jet and packing inside a 1.5 L MSR pot. MSR states a 2.8-minute 1 L boil on kerosene. IPGA’s guidance says it burns white gas, kerosene, unleaded auto gas and diesel. Compared with the WhisperLite International, IPGA describes the XGK EX as louder and heavier, with no simmer function, while it boils more water per litre of fuel (see the IPGA table above). Choose it when fuel range and field repair matter more than quiet operation or fine heat control. Model details are on the MSR XGK EX page.
Why the list has four models, not five
MSR support guidance names the DragonFly as its liquid-fuel stove with a fully adjustable flame for simmering, which makes it relevant to cooks who want fine heat control. We could not confirm its current specifications, weight, fuel list or availability, so it is not ranked. Check MSR’s current catalogue before you plan around it.

Matching a stove to your trip
- One fuel, simplest setup: the WhisperLite, if white gas is easy to find on your route.
- Uncertain fuel on international or remote trips: a multi-fuel model. Check each stove’s fuel list against what you can actually buy, since the four models differ.
- Simmering and pot cooking: the Universal, which MSR positions for simmering, or the DragonFly if its current specifications suit you.
- Long, fuel-heavy expeditions: the XGK EX, given IPGA’s fuel-per-litre figure, but accept its noise and weight.
- Lowest packaged weight: the International and Universal both list 14.9 oz, below the WhisperLite’s 15.2 oz.
Fuel quality, cleaning and maintenance
- MSR says old white gas degrades and can clog fuel lines. Degradation depends on fuel quality and exposure to air and heat, so store fuel sealed and cool, and replace old fuel.
- If the flame or flow goes wrong, MSR’s troubleshooting guidance says to clean the jet first and the fuel line if needed.
- MSR identifies Coleman fuel as white gas and names MSR SuperFuel, Crown and Camplite camping fuel. Compatibility is model-specific, so follow each stove’s manual rather than assuming one fuel works everywhere.
- Before a trip, confirm that jet-cleaning tools and any spare parts for your exact model can be obtained.
Wind, setup and safety
“Even a wind of 5 to 10 mph can really affect the efficiency of your stove if it’s not screened properly.”
— Jenny Askey, backpacking expert at REI Co-op’s Boulder, Colorado store, in REI’s 2025 buying guide
Rank #4
MSR WhisperLite Compact Camping and Backpacking Stove
- Reliable and simple design has been trusted by backpackers, hikers, and adventurers for over 25 years

- Shaker Jet technology and straight-forward design allow easy cleaning and maintenance in the field
- Ultralight stainless steel and brass construction weighs only 11.5 ounces
- Includes fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small-parts kit, instructions, and stuff sack (fuel bottle not included)
A manual excerpt we could access says the stove is for outdoor use only and that you should wait five minutes after the flame goes out before relighting. That excerpt did not identify a specific model, so treat it as general guidance. Priming, ventilation, fuel handling and maintenance are model-specific, and the current manual for your exact stove governs them.
