Water Purification Tablets: How to Make Water Safe and Choose the Right Product

Water tablets can disinfect some microbes, but ingredient, dose, water clarity, and contact time matter. Learn how to choose and use them safely.

Water purification tablets can disinfect some disease-causing microbes, but they do not make every unsafe water source safe. For hiking, camping, travel, or an emergency, first remove cloudiness when possible, then use a tablet exactly as its label directs. The active ingredient determines which organisms the treatment can address.

How do I make water safe with purification tablets?

When practical, boiling is the best way to kill germs in water. For hiking, camping, or travel, the CDC identifies filtering followed by disinfection as the next-best option. Tablets are a disinfection step—not a substitute for removing sediment or addressing chemical contamination.

  1. Choose the safest available source. Avoid water suspected of chemical contamination, fuel, or toxic substances. Boiling and disinfection do not remove heavy metals, salts, or most other chemicals, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  2. Clear the water. If it is cloudy, colored, or contains sediment, let particles settle and pour off the clearer water, or prefilter it. EPA says disinfection is less effective in cloudy or colored water.
  3. Measure and dose according to the product label. Tablet strengths and instructions differ. EPA cautions: “Follow the instructions on the product label as each product may have a different strength.”
  4. Wait the full contact time. Keep the water undisturbed for the length of time on the label before drinking it. Do not assume another brand has the same dose or wait time.

Chemical disinfectants kill viruses and bacteria, but may not kill parasites, the CDC notes in its emergency water safety guidance. Organism coverage depends on the ingredient and directions.

Which tablet ingredient should I choose?

Ingredient or method What the guidance establishes Important qualification
Chlorine tablets Can disinfect some microbes. CDC says chlorine tablets do not kill Cryptosporidium.
Iodine tablets Can disinfect some microbes. CDC says iodine tablets do not kill Cryptosporidium and gives specific cautions for use.
Chlorine dioxide tablets CDC says they can kill Cryptosporidium when directions are followed; its outdoor-treatment guidance describes them as somewhat effective against it. Filtering first remains the safest approach for parasite removal. Product instructions still govern treatment.
Boiling CDC identifies boiling as the best way to kill germs in water. It does not remove heavy metals, salts, or most other chemicals, per EPA.

For outdoor water where parasites are a concern, the CDC’s backcountry water treatment guidance supports filtering first; chlorine dioxide offers better protection against Cryptosporidium than iodine or chlorine tablets, but the exact product instructions matter.

What do common tablet labels say?

These examples illustrate why dose, volume, and wait time cannot be generalized across products. They are label or manufacturer specifications, not results of independent head-to-head testing.

Product example Active ingredient and dose Volume and contact time Evidence and limits
Aquatabs 17 mg green packet CDC’s instruction sheet identifies 17 mg sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) per tablet. One tablet for 5 L of clear water; wait 30 minutes. CDC instruction sheet; publication date not stated. Follow the package for cloudy water and prefilter when possible. Do not swallow tablets.
Aquatabs 49 mg product Manufacturer identifies a 49 mg NaDCC tablet. One tablet treats up to 2 L; wait 30 minutes. Manufacturer product-page statements, accessed 2026-10-08; not independent comparative findings.
Potable Aqua iodine tablets EPA registration record lists the iodine-containing active ingredient. EPA-accepted 2018 label: two tablets per quart of most water; 35-minute ready time. Emergency drinking-water label directions; these do not supersede CDC’s iodine cautions.

Aquatabs says its NaDCC tablets, in non-turbid water within 30 minutes, reduce bacteria by 99.9999%, viruses by 99.99%, and Giardia cysts by 99.9%. These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified comparative results; clarity and correct use are conditions of the claims. See the Aquatabs FAQ. Its U.S. product page also reports EPA registration for specified sizes and suggests chlorine test strips to check residual ppm: Aquatabs US product page.

What should I compare before choosing tablets?

  • Active ingredient: Check whether it is chlorine, iodine, or chlorine dioxide; the ingredient affects parasite coverage.
  • Dose and water volume: Match the exact tablet strength to the label’s stated volume.
  • Contact time: Follow the full wait time; a familiar brand name does not guarantee identical directions across product strengths.
  • Water clarity instructions: Check what the label says for cloudy water, and settle or prefilter when possible.
  • Shelf life and storage: Check the package expiry and storage instructions. Keep tablets in their original packaging.
  • Specific cautions: Review ingredient-specific warnings, especially for iodine products.

Who should avoid iodine-treated water?

The CDC advises pregnant people, people with thyroid problems, and people with iodine hypersensitivity to avoid water treated with iodine. It also advises that no one drink iodine-treated water for more than a few weeks at a time. The Potable Aqua label’s dose and ready time do not cancel these public-health cautions.

What tablets cannot do—and when to use another treatment

  • They are not general chemical purifiers. EPA warns that boiling or disinfection does not remove heavy metals, salts, and most other chemicals. If chemical contamination is suspected, use a contaminant-specific treatment or a known-safe water source.
  • They may not kill every parasite. CDC says iodine and chlorine tablets do not kill Cryptosporidium; chlorine dioxide tablets can kill it when directions are followed.
  • They work less reliably in cloudy water. Settle or filter cloudy, colored, or sediment-filled water before disinfection where possible.
  • They are not for swallowing directly. Keep tablets in their original package and use them only to treat water as directed.
