If you need to cut rough grass and brush with an ATV or UTV, compare tow-behind rough-cut mowers by cutting width, engine, terrain, and documented vegetation capacity—not by an unverified “best” ranking. The five DR models below form a manufacturer-catalog shortlist, not independently tested reviews. Their advertised performance figures are manufacturer claims, and real mowing pace depends on brush density and terrain.
What an ATV brush mower is—and what it is not
An ATV brush mower is a powered rough-cut mower pulled behind a vehicle. It is distinct from a tractor rotary cutter driven by a PTO and from a handheld brush cutter. DR lists ATV, UTV, and tractor tow vehicles for its field-and-brush mowers; Swisher describes its Trailcutter for ATV or UTV use. See the manufacturers’ descriptions at DR Power Equipment and Swisher.
Five tow-behind models to compare
This shortlist uses the five DR models whose specifications are presented together in the manufacturer’s catalog. It is not a comparative test or a claim that one is objectively best. Figures below are current manufacturer-listed claims accessed in 2026; acreage rates are estimates, not guaranteed field results.
| Model | Cut width | Engine | Manufacturer-stated mowing rate | Manufacturer-stated sapling capacity | Best comparison angle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DR PREMIER 44T | 44 in. | 10.5 HP | Up to 1 acre per hour | Up to 3 in. | Entry model in DR’s tow-behind range |
| DR PRO 44T | 44 in. | 17.5 HP | Up to 1.5 acres per hour | Up to 3 in. | More stated power than the PREMIER at the same nominal width |
| DR PRO XL44T | 44 in. | 20 HP | Up to 2 acres per hour | Up to 3 in. | More stated power in a 44-inch cut |
| DR PRO MAX52T | 52 in. | 22 HP | Up to 2.4 acres per hour | Up to 3 in. | Wider cutting path |
| DR PRO MAX60T | 60 in. | 24 HP Kawasaki | Up to 2.7 acres per hour | Up to 3 in. | Widest DR option in the surfaced catalog |
Specifications and capacity claims are from DR Power Equipment’s tow-behind catalog and, for the PREMIER, its product listing. The source describes the figures as “up to” performance; DR notes mowing time varies with density and terrain. Sapling capacity should not be treated as a guarantee across species, density, or conditions.

#1 Best Overall
- ROUGH & TOUGH: The Acreage can clear tall grass, thick brush and saplings up to 3" thick in a single 44” wide pass. Two pivoting break-away blades are designed to tackle the tough stuff, but swing out of the way when encountering rocks or stumps, protecting the blades and drive system.
- ADJUSTABLE OFFSET MOWING: Fully offset the mower behind the tow vehicle up to 4’ in either direction for mowing trails or ditch slopes, and under tree limbs. Tool-less cutting height adjustment allows for changing the cutting height on the fly from 3.5" to 7.5".
- TRUSTED POWER: Maintain overgrown properties with an always reliable 17.5hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Its Advanced Debris Management System keeps the engine clean by deflecting and ejecting grass and debris, making for a longer engine life.
- ELECTRIC START: Engine features a keyed electric start with included battery, providing quick, reliable ignition without the need for manual pull-starting.
- EASY TO OPERATE: Engage the blades with a simple pull of a lever and disengage from the convenience of your seat by pulling on the included rope.
DR PREMIER 44T: compact entry point
The PREMIER combines a 44-inch cut and 10.5 HP engine with a manufacturer estimate of up to 1 acre per hour. DR advertises cutting saplings up to 3 inches. The manufacturer’s product page lists a 2-year residential machine warranty and a 90-day commercial machine warranty; engine terms are separate, and exclusions and current terms should be checked on the live page.
DR PRO 44T: more stated power at the same width
At 44 inches, the PRO 44T has a manufacturer-listed 17.5 HP engine and an estimated rate of up to 1.5 acres per hour. DR also lists capacity for saplings up to 3 inches. The advertised figures are not independently measured comparisons with the PREMIER.

DR PRO XL44T: higher-power 44-inch option
The PRO XL44T is listed with 20 HP, a 44-inch cut, and up to 2 acres per hour, with the same stated sapling capacity of up to 3 inches. Its main catalog distinction is more engine power without moving to a wider deck.
DR PRO MAX52T: wider cut
The PRO MAX52T pairs a 52-inch cutting width with a 22 HP engine. DR lists a rate of up to 2.4 acres per hour and capacity for saplings up to 3 inches. A wider mower may be less convenient to maneuver or store, so consider access and towing stability as well as nominal productivity.
Rank #3
- Designed for finish‑cut mowing — not intended for brush or saplings
- 15.5 HP (500cc) Briggs & Stratton 12V engine — dependable power for large mowing jobs
- 2–5.5 in. cutting height range — adjust easily for different grass conditions
- Three G6 Gator mulching blades — produce a clean, professional finish

DR PRO MAX60T: widest listed option
DR lists the PRO MAX60T with a 60-inch cut, 24 HP Kawasaki engine, up to 2.7 acres per hour, and capacity for saplings up to 3 inches. Those are manufacturer claims, not a promise of the same rate or cutting result on every property.
A Swisher alternative
Swisher’s Classic Rough-Cut Trailcutter is a relevant cross-shop option for ATV and UTV owners. Its product page describes a 44-inch welded deck made from 11-gauge steel; the surfaced listing identifies an 11.5 HP version. The available manufacturer information does not establish equivalent acreage-per-hour or sapling-capacity figures, so those measures should not be inferred or compared against DR’s claims. Check the live page for the exact current model and specifications: Swisher Classic Rough-Cut Trailcutter.
Rank #4
- Designed for rough‑cut mowing — not intended for finish‑cut lawns
- 14.5 HP Kawasaki V‑Twin 12V engine — strong, reliable cutting power
- Remote operator control console — engage blades from the towing vehicle
- Articulating hitch with 2 in. ball coupler — infinite offset adjustment and compact storage
- Standard lawn & garden battery not included
How to choose a tow-behind brush mower
1. Match capacity to the vegetation
Start with what you actually need to cut: grass, dense weeds, woody brush, or saplings. DR advertises up to 3-inch sapling capacity for the listed models, but that does not establish performance for every species, density, or terrain. Check the exact mower manual and do not use a capacity claim as a substitute for safe operating guidance.
2. Balance width and the property
The listed DR models range from 44 to 60 inches. A wider cut may reduce passes in open areas, while narrow gates, trees, uneven ground, and storage space can make a wider deck harder to use. Manufacturer acreage-per-hour estimates range from 1 to 2.7 across these models, but DR says actual mowing time varies with density and terrain. Treat the figures as estimates rather than a basis for promising a job completion time.

- Designed for finish‑cut mowing — ideal for lawns and fields (not intended for brush or saplings)
- Universal articulating hitch with adjustable offset — mow ditches, fence lines, and under low branches with ease
- 44 in. heavy‑duty 11‑gauge steel deck — covers more ground per pass to cut mowing time in half
- Single‑point height adjustment (1.5–4.5 in.) — dial in the perfect cut for any lawn
- Two G6 Gator mulching blades — produce a clean, professional finish cut
3. Verify the tow vehicle and hitch
Check the ATV or UTV owner’s manual for towing guidance and confirm hitch compatibility and operating limits in both vehicle and mower manuals. Suitability depends on the specific vehicle and the ground and slopes where it will work. The cited product information does not establish universal towing-capacity, payload, or slope limits for ATVs, so do not assume that a model’s advertised use with an ATV means every ATV is suitable.
4. Compare controls and adjustment
Control and setup details differ by model and trim year. DR’s catalog describes manual hand-crank height adjustment on several models, electric lift on PRO MAX models, and remote blade engagement on the PRO 44T page. Verify the exact feature set for the model being sold and consider whether the controls fit the terrain and work pattern on your property.
5. Check ownership and support details
Before buying, confirm current warranty terms, engine coverage, service availability, replacement-blade sourcing, and the space needed to store the machine. The PREMIER warranty details above are what its manufacturer page lists; terms can change and may include exclusions.
What “reviews” can—and cannot—establish here
The manufacturer pages establish that these models are listed and describe their advertised features. They do not provide independent comparative tests, owner reliability evidence, or a defensible ranking of the five DR models. Use the shortlist to identify candidates, then compare current manuals, specifications, warranty terms, and dealer support before choosing.
