The Tool Carousel Woodworking Plan from WoodworkersWorkshop describes a rotating storage unit built around a center column, with six tool-holding wings. You reach a tool by turning the whole carousel or by turning the wing it sits on, so both sides of every wing are accessible. The seller’s listing claims the unit holds 135 tools and bits inside a 2 × 2-foot footprint of wall space. Before you buy or cut stock, you should know what the plan includes, what the public listing leaves out, and which hardware decisions are yours to make.

What the plan is and how it is built

The design is a vertical carousel. A center column carries the rotating assembly, and six wings radiate from it. Each wing holds tools, so the carousel works as a single store of many small items rather than a set of separate racks. Because the listing frames the footprint in terms of wall space, read the plan’s construction drawings before you assume it is a freestanding unit. Confirm how the column is supported and how the top and bottom attach to the wall or base.

Six wings on a center column

The six wings are the main storage surface. Rotating the whole carousel brings a wing to you, and rotating an individual wing exposes its second face. That two-axis access is the feature that separates this plan from a simple single-face rack, and it is also the part that puts the most demand on the bearing and fasteners at the column.

Access from both sides of each wing

Because both faces of a wing are reachable, you can store tools on the back of the wing as well as the front. Plan the spacing so tools on one face do not block the rotation of the adjacent wing. This is a layout check you can do on paper with your own tool list before any stock is cut.

What the 135-tool and 2 × 2-foot claims mean for you

The capacity figure is the seller’s own estimate for a set of tools and bits. It is not a measured test, and it does not say what mix of tools produced the number. A shop full of large handplanes, a long-handled chisel set, and a few bulky router bits will fit far fewer pieces than the same count of small drill bits and driver bits. To judge whether the plan fits your needs, count your tools by size, not by quantity, and sketch them onto a wing layout at full scale.

The footprint figure has the same limit. The listing gives 2 × 2 feet of wall space, but it does not state the clearance needed for the carousel to turn, the distance from the wall, or the space needed in front of the unit to reach a wing. Measure the full swing of the largest wing in your shop before committing to that wall.

  • Space-Saving Foldable Design: Folds flat in seconds for compact storage in garages, tool trailers, or truck beds—ideal for on-the-go contractors and hobbyists

Materials and shop tools

The listing uses specific woods in its example build and says you may substitute others. The example materials are:

  • Birch plywood
  • Poplar
  • Tempered hardboard
  • Laminated poplar

The listing names the shop tools the build calls for: a bandsaw, drill, clamps, jointer, tablesaw, and common hand tools. If you do not own a jointer, check whether the plan’s wing or column stock depends on it before you substitute material. Substituting a different plywood or hardboard changes the weight of each wing, which feeds straight into the bearing decision covered below.

What you receive with the plan

The plan is offered as a paper copy or as a PDF download. According to the listing, the package includes a full materials and supplies list, building instructions, and finishing guidelines. Confirm the format and the current price on the seller’s page when you buy, because listing details can change.

What the public listing does not disclose

  • A complete cut list with every part dimension
  • A detailed assembly sequence
  • The bearing specification, including type, size, and load rating
  • The exact hardware model
  • Any independently measured performance figures

Do not fill these gaps with dimensions or hardware from a different carousel design. Rotating tool storage varies widely in column diameter, wing length, and bearing choice, and a part that fits one design may not fit this one. Ask the seller, or check the plan’s own drawings once you have the PDF or paper copy, before buying hardware.

The bearing question

Readers who search for “what bearing do I need for a rotating tool stand?” are usually asking the right question about this design, but the public listing does not answer it. The closest documented reference is Woodsmith’s Revolving Tool Station, which sits on roller bearings under a large rotating platform. That is a different project with a different load, so treat it as a model of the bearing type, not as a specification for the WoodworkersWorkshop carousel.

  1. Weigh your tools by wing. Add up the full loaded weight of each wing, not just the average, because the heaviest wing sets the worst-case load.
  2. Add the weight of the wings, the column, and any top or shelf fitted to the carousel.
  3. Choose a bearing whose published rated load exceeds that total with a clear margin. Check whether the rating is static or dynamic, and use the figure that matches a rotating load.
  4. Match the bearing’s bore and mounting pattern to your column and to the base or wall plate. A bearing that does not fit the column diameter cannot be fixed by shimming.
  5. Check whether the bearing is meant to carry the load directly or only to guide rotation. Some turntable bearings are intended for light, centered loads and are a poor fit for a carousel that hangs weight off one side.

Turntable and lazy-Susan bearings are a common category of purchase for this kind of project. Treat any bearing you find as a component you verify against your own design and load, not as a confirmed match for the plan.

How the plan compares with other rotating tool projects

Several published plans deal with rotating tool storage, but they solve different problems. The table below compares only what each public source describes. Where a source does not state a detail, the cell says so.

Plan Source and date Intended use Footprint or capacity Rotation Materials and tools named Cut list or drawings
Tool Carousel Woodworking Plan WoodworkersWorkshop seller listing, undated Hand tools and bits in a full carousel 135 tools and bits (seller’s claim); 2 × 2 ft of wall space Six wings on a center column; whole carousel and individual wings both rotate Birch plywood, poplar, tempered hardboard, laminated poplar; bandsaw, drill, clamps, jointer, tablesaw, hand tools Materials list and instructions included; complete cut list not stated in the public listing
Revolving Tool Station Woodsmith article, May 13, 2021 Consolidating benchtop power tools such as a drill press, disc sander, grinder, scroll saw, and sharpening station Nine square feet Large rotating platform on roller bearings around a central conduit support; second rotating platform in the base Primarily plywood and common hardware Not stated in the article’s description
Woodsmith Rotating Tool Caddy Woodpeckers retailer listing, undated Benchtop organization for small hand tools Not stated Central bin with four radiating racks; rotation method not stated Not stated in the listing Materials list, photos and illustrations, standard instructions; premium shop drawings sold as a supplement
Spinning Rack Keeps Lathe Tools Handy Fine Woodworking, Stephen Scott, December 15, 2011 Lathe tool storage Not stated Not stated Not stated Downloadable plan with annotated color sketches and dimensions

The Woodsmith station and the WoodworkersWorkshop carousel are not interchangeable. The station is a larger, plywood-and-hardware platform for stationary power tools, and its bearing arrangement belongs to that design. The Woodpeckers caddy is a smaller benchtop project. The Fine Woodworking spinning rack is aimed at lathe tools and is a separate plan with its own dimensions.

Before you buy or build

  • Inventory your tools by size and count the wing space each group needs.
  • Measure the wall or floor area, including the clearance for the largest wing to turn fully.
  • Confirm the plan format (paper or PDF) and the current price on the seller’s page.
  • Check the plan’s drawings for the column, base, and mounting details before buying hardware.
  • Select the bearing from your loaded-weight total, not from another design’s parts list.
  • Plan your wood choice around weight: heavier stock raises the load the bearing must carry.
