Saw Blades

Are General-Purpose Table Saw Blades a Good One-Blade Choice?

A general-purpose blade can cover mixed ripping and crosscutting, but its diameter, arbor, kerf, and plate must match your table saw. Compare two documented 10-inch examples.

Yes—a general-purpose or combination blade is a reasonable single-blade choice for mixed ripping and crosscutting, provided its specifications match your particular table saw. Freud’s 10-inch, 40-tooth Premier Fusion P410T is explicitly described for both tasks; CMT’s 10-inch, 50-tooth 285.650.10 is a different combination design. Neither specification sheet proves that a blade fits every 10-inch saw or performs best in every material.

What “general-purpose” means

The label generally signals that a blade is intended to handle more than one type of cut. Freud specifically identifies its Premier Fusion P410T for ripping and crosscutting. That makes it a documented example of the one-blade approach, not a guarantee of identical results across materials or cutting conditions. Freud’s P410T specifications

“Combination” blades can use different tooth layouts and dimensions. CMT’s 285.650.10, for example, has 50 teeth and a listed mixed ATB/TCG configuration. The name alone does not tell you whether its dimensions suit your saw. CMT’s 285.650.10 specifications

How the documented examples compare

Specification Freud Premier Fusion P410T CMT 285.650.10
Diameter 10 in. (Freud product page) 10 in. (CMT product page)
Teeth and geometry 40 teeth; Hi-ATB grind (Freud product page) 50 teeth; listed as 4 ATB, 20 + 1 TCG (CMT product page)
Arbor or bore 5/8 in. arbor (Freud product page) 5/8 in. bore (CMT product page)
Kerf and plate .091 in. kerf; .071 in. plate (Freud product page) .126 in. kerf; .087 in. plate (CMT product page)
Stated task or type Ripping and crosscutting (Freud product page) Combination blade (CMT product page)

The figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled comparison. The different tooth counts do not establish which blade will cut better for your work; geometry, kerf, plate, and the maker’s stated use all matter. Freud lists an 18-degree hook angle for the P410T. As another reference point—not a general-purpose-versus-combination test—Forrest describes its 10-inch Woodworker II as a 40-tooth ATB blade for table-saw use, with a 15-degree face hook angle. How to choose one for your saw

  1. Check the saw manual. Confirm the permitted blade diameter, arbor requirements, and any other blade-dimension limits for your specific table saw. A shared 10-inch diameter does not establish full compatibility.
  2. Compare the arbor and bore. The two examples above are listed at 5/8 inch, but check your saw’s arbor and whether its manual permits any bushing arrangement.
  3. Verify kerf and plate. The Freud example lists a .091-inch kerf and .071-inch plate; the CMT lists a .126-inch kerf and .087-inch plate. Check these dimensions against the saw’s requirements rather than assuming blades of the same diameter are interchangeable.
  4. Match the stated use to your work. If one blade must cover both ripping and crosscutting, Freud explicitly describes the P410T for both. Treat that as the manufacturer’s stated application, not independent proof of cut quality in every material.
  5. Weigh the tooth design, not just the count. The examples differ in tooth count and geometry, so a larger number is not, by itself, a reliable quality ranking. Consider the full published configuration and your saw’s compatibility requirements.

A retail listing also describes a 10-inch, 40-tooth carbide blade as suitable for miter and table saws, but a retailer’s description is not a replacement for the blade maker’s specifications or the table-saw manual. Retail listing

What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you

Manufacturer pages support comparing published dimensions and intended-use descriptions. They do not establish a head-to-head winner: the available information does not include controlled finish or feed-force measurements, comparative pricing, or proof of universal compatibility. Choose by fit and intended work rather than treating a product label or tooth count as a performance test.

Sharpening and ownership

Carbide-blade sharpening and tip replacement are available services; Freud Sharpening advertises both. That establishes a service option, not that sharpening is economical for every blade or worthwhile for every owner. Freud Sharpening services
