Task chair and office chair are overlapping labels, not a reliable ergonomic specification. A task chair is usually designed for work tasks, while office chair is the broader category. To choose between two chairs, compare their adjustment range and how well each fits your body, desk and work—not the label.
What is the difference between a task chair and an office chair?
“Task chair” commonly describes a chair intended for desk or computer work. “Office chair” can refer to a wider range of seating, including task chairs. There is no universal industry-wide definition that makes the two categories mutually exclusive or guarantees particular features.
That means you cannot assume every task chair is less adjustable, or that every office chair provides more support. For example, Steelcase labels its Series 2 a task chair and lists height-adjustable lumbar support for specified upholstered or 3D MicroKnit configurations; the feature depends on the configuration. Check the Series 2 specifications for the particular configuration you are considering.
How to compare chairs for ergonomic fit
Compare the actual adjustments and fit at your workstation. OSHA and NIH guidance point to seat height, backrest and lumbar support, and armrest position as practical factors to check.

1. Seat height and desk alignment
Check that the chair’s height range lets you sit with your feet supported—on the floor or a footrest—and position yourself comfortably in relation to your desk, keyboard and monitor. NIH notes that seat-height adjustment helps support this alignment. See NIH chair guidance.
2. Backrest and lumbar support
Check whether the backrest supports your lower back and whether its shape or adjustment fits you. OSHA cautions that a chair without a suitable or adjustable backrest may not provide adequate lumbar support; its purchasing guide includes an adjustable backrest with lumbar support among the criteria to consider. OSHA’s chair guidance and purchasing guide provide further detail. NIH describes adequate lumbar support as the most crucial element of a backrest; this is its ergonomics guidance, not a guarantee that one chair will suit everyone.

3. Armrest fit and desk clearance
Armrests should support your lower arms while your upper arms remain near your torso and your shoulders relaxed. They should not stop the chair from moving close enough to the desk. If the armrests cannot be adjusted to fit or interfere with your workstation position, OSHA advises removing them or not using them.
4. Fit for the work and the individual
Consider the work you do and how long and often you use the workstation, alongside your own fit and needs. WorkSafe Queensland gives computer-based work as an example of a task-chair use case, but the name alone does not establish that a model is suitable for a full workday. A practical checklist before choosing
- Does the seat-height range let you sit with your feet supported and align comfortably with your workstation?
- Does the backrest support your lower back, and can you adjust it if needed?
- Do the armrests support your lower arms without raising your shoulders or blocking desk access?
- Can you move the chair close enough to the desk to work comfortably?
- Does the chair’s fit and adjustability suit your work and individual needs?
Use this checklist to compare models, whether they are marketed as task chairs, office chairs or both. Verify the dimensions and features of the exact model and configuration rather than relying on the category name.
