Sanding removes material or surface flaws and can prepare a surface for a coating. For a good result, match the abrasive and tool to the material and the work, move from coarser to finer grits so each step erases the marks left by the previous one, and control dust at its source where practical.

What grit sandpaper should I use?

Choose grit based on the material, what you need to remove or smooth, and the finish that will follow. There is no single grit schedule for every project: the right starting and finishing grits depend on the substrate, its condition, the tool, and the intended result.

  1. Identify the surface. Note the material and any existing paint or other coating.
  2. Decide what the sanding must do. Removing material or a coating calls for a different starting point than light smoothing or blending.
  3. Start with an abrasive suited to that task. Check the abrasive maker’s directions and confirm the product is appropriate for the surface and coating.
  4. Work toward finer grits in sequence. Each finer grit should remove the marks left by the previous one. 3M advises not skipping more than one grit in a sequence; that guidance is not a universal grit schedule for every job.

General-purpose aluminum-oxide sheets are sold for uses including paint, wood, and metal. 3M also describes general-purpose sanding sheets for surface flaws, paint or rust removal, deburring, and blending. These descriptions are product-use guidance, not a guarantee that one abrasive suits every substrate, coating, or finish: 3M Aluminum Oxide Sandpaper Fine, 9001NA and 3M General Purpose Sanding Sheets 9016NA-CC.

How do I choose a sanding method?

Match the abrasive’s format to the task and tool. A sheet can be used by hand, supported by a sanding block, or cut to fit a power sander when the sheet and tool are compatible.

For wood, follow the grain during final smoothing. Confirm abrasive and tool compatibility before fitting a sheet to powered equipment.

How do I sand wood?

  1. Choose an abrasive for the wood’s condition and the work to be done; do not assume the same starting grit suits every board or finish.
  2. Use the sheet by hand, on a block, or on a compatible sander, following the tool manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Progress from coarser to finer abrasives so the next step removes the previous step’s scratches. Follow the abrasive maker’s grit-sequence guidance.
  4. Sand with the grain for final smoothing.
  5. Plan for dust capture and protection before sanding, especially when using a power sander.

How do I sand without making a mess?

Sanding creates fine dust. OSHA notes that wood dust and finishing chemicals can pose skin and respiratory health hazards, and says sanders produce considerable fine wood dust. Its woodworking guidance calls for careful ventilation: OSHA eTool: Woodworking and A Guide for Protecting Workers from Woodworking Hazards (OSHA 3157).

  • Protect your eyes and face. Sanding can send particles into the air.
  • Assess respiratory protection for the actual materials and exposure. A single respirator cannot be prescribed for every sanding task. 3M’s abrasive-products safety sheet says respiratory protection, if needed, should be selected based on an exposure assessment and used as part of a full respiratory protection program. Its guidance is not a household exposure assessment: 3M Abrasive Products, 210U safety data sheet.

What should I watch for with a power sander?

In addition to airborne dust, powered sanding presents mechanical hazards. OSHA identifies contact with abrasive surfaces, in-running nip points, and flying chips as woodworking hazards. Keep hands away from abrasive surfaces, use guards as directed, and replace excessively worn or damaged belts or drums. Follow the specific tool manual and applicable safety rules; OSHA’s workplace guidance is available in its woodworking hazards guide.
