Resawing on a table saw is a ripping operation, so the central risks are kickback and contact with the blade. Use the saw only within its manufacturer-rated capacity, keep its applicable guards and safety devices working, and follow the manual for your specific saw, blade, and setup. There is no universal safe stock thickness, blade projection, pass count, or jig design that applies to every table saw.
Why resawing requires extra care
During ripping, the blade cuts along the length of the stock. OSHA identifies kickback as stock caught by the blade and thrown toward the operator, and says it is more likely during ripping than crosscutting. Incorrect blade height, poor maintenance, missing safeguards, and poor-quality lumber can contribute to kickback. Hands can also be injured by slips, being held too close to the blade, or reaching to remove stock or scrap.
Resawing can involve stock that is tall, heavy, or difficult to control. Whether a particular saw can handle a particular piece is a question for that saw’s rated capacity and instructions—not a general rule for table saws.
Check that the saw and setup are suitable
- Confirm that the saw is rated for the stock and operation, and follow its manual’s limits and setup instructions. OSHA advises using equipment within the manufacturer’s rated capacity.
- Use a blade suited to ripping and operate it at the speed specified by the manufacturer. Check that the blade and safeguards are compatible with the saw and the intended cut.
- Keep guards and safety devices functional; do not remove or bypass them to make a cut fit. OSHA’s table-saw guidance describes a self-adjusting guard that contacts the material, a spreader, and anti-kickback fingers as relevant safeguards. The applicable configuration depends on the machine and context.
- Make sure the stock is stable and that both the uncut stock and the cut material or offcut can be supported without forcing or twisting them.
- Do not proceed if the manual does not authorize the setup, the stock cannot be controlled, or required safeguards cannot remain in place.
OSHA’s general-industry woodworking regulation has provisions for covered hand-fed circular ripsaws and circular resaws, including guard, spreader, and push-stick or push-block requirements. Those provisions apply in their workplace regulatory context; they are not a substitute for the instructions for a household saw or a universal setup prescription. See 29 CFR 1910.213.

Reduce exposure during the cut
- Keep hands out of the blade’s cut line and away from the point of operation. Never guide stock freehand.
- Use a push stick when appropriate, including for small pieces and to move stock past the blade while keeping hands away. A push stick does not make an unsuitable setup safe and does not replace guards or training.
- Stand to the side of the likely kickback path rather than directly behind the stock.
- Guide the stock parallel to the rip fence; avoid twisting or forcing it against the blade.
- Support the stock, cut material, scrap, and finished stock so that weight or movement does not destabilize the cut.
- Wear eye and face protection against chips, splinters, and broken teeth.
- Wait for the blade to stop before leaving the saw station, unless the saw’s brake stops it.
OSHA’s table-saw guidance describes these hazards and safeguards. Its point-of-operation guidance also emphasizes training on machine hazards and special setups, working safeguards, and push sticks that keep hands away from the blade.
What to do if stock binds
Do not push harder by hand or reach toward the blade to free the workpiece. Stop and follow the saw manufacturer’s safe shutdown and clearing procedure before addressing the bind. OSHA recounts a rip-saw accident in which stock bound, a worker pushed hard by hand, and the stock broke free, exposing the blade and causing multiple finger amputations. That account illustrates a hazard; it is not an estimate of how often such injuries occur.

- 5X GREATER MAXIMUM RESISTANCE: Our tablesaw feather board has closed-cell EVA foam feathers with an innovative living hinge design to pinch lumber tightly against the fence, absorbing extreme forces far better than rigid plastic or wood models.
- SMOOTH CHATTER-FREE FEED: High-contact EVA dampens machine vibration and eliminates board wiggle for smooth gliding and clean cuts on table saws or router tables. Consider it when choosing cool gifts for woodworkers focused on cut quality.
- NON-MARRING & REVERSIBLE FEATHERS: Our featherboard has interchangeable feathers that won't bleed color or scratch softwoods. Crucially, they will never damage carbide blades upon accidental contact and won't trigger sensitive Saw Stop systems.
- SUPER STRONG EXPANSION SLOT HOLD: Includes a heavy-duty 3/4" miter bar that expands rapidly for an ironclad, slip-free grip inside standard U- and T-shaped miter slots, adjusted effortlessly via comfortable ergonomic knobs.
- DUAL 6-INCH EXTENDED TRAVEL SLOTS: Our featherboards for table saw are equipped with two 1-1/2" T-bolts (5/16"-18 thread) that fit 1/4" to 3/4" T-tracks. Deliver maximum horizontal adjustability across a variety of woodworking machinery setups.
Why there is no universal resaw recipe
General safety guidance does not establish a safe maximum thickness, blade exposure, number of passes, or jig design for table-saw resawing. These depend on the specific machine, blade, stock, safeguards, and manufacturer-approved setup. Do not infer a safe procedure from another saw’s setup or from a generic dimension. If the manual does not cover the operation, ask the manufacturer or a qualified woodworking-machine professional rather than improvising or disabling a safeguard.
