There is no published evidence that coffee grounds repel or kill garden pests, and an Extension educator described using them for pest control as a home remedy with no evidence of success. Don’t rely on scattered grounds to protect plants or keep earwigs out of a home. Instead, confirm that earwigs are causing a problem, remove the damp hiding places they favor, and use traps or indoor exclusion where needed.
What the evidence says about coffee grounds
Washington State University Extension says, “There is no published evidence that coffee grounds will repel or kill any garden pests.” The statement concerns garden-pest claims generally; it does not prove that every conceivable use is impossible, but it gives no basis for relying on grounds against earwigs. In a response dated March 6, 2025, Extension educator David Lowenstein likewise called coffee-ground pest control “a home remedy with no evidence of success.”
Scattering grounds may also distract from the practical steps supported by university guidance: reducing earwig shelter and excess surface moisture, then trapping repeatedly. No comparative efficacy figures establish a best coffee-ground treatment or a guaranteed alternative.
When earwigs are worth managing
Earwigs prefer dark, moist shelter, hide beneath debris and other objects, and are generally active at night. They are omnivores: they may feed on aphids and insect eggs, as well as damage tender plants or soft fruit when abundant. A sighting alone is not proof that intervention is needed.

Confirm the cause of plant damage
Before changing your garden routine, check suspect plants after dark with a flashlight. UC IPM recommends a nighttime inspection because other pests can cause similar leaf damage. Match your response to damage you have actually observed rather than trying to eliminate every earwig.
Decide whether the problem is indoors or outdoors
In a garden, focus on hiding places near susceptible plants and use traps. Indoors, sweep or vacuum visible earwigs, then inspect likely entry points and seal gaps. Removing outdoor shelter and managing moisture close to the structure can also make the area less favorable.

Reduce outdoor shelter and moisture
- Clear leaf litter, boards, plant debris, and other objects that provide cover near vulnerable beds.
- Thin or remove mulch where it is harboring earwigs; keep dense weeds and ground cover away from garden beds.
- Where practical, reduce surface wetness. UC IPM recommends drip irrigation where possible. Minnesota Extension suggests watering deeply but less often so the soil surface stays drier.
These changes reduce favorable conditions; they do not promise eradication. Avoid removing useful habitat indiscriminately if earwigs are not causing verified damage.
Use traps consistently in the garden
Trapping is a practical way to collect earwigs around affected plants, but it takes repeat checks and is not a guaranteed one-time fix. UC IPM and Minnesota Extension describe simple shelter and oil-baited traps.

Shelter traps
Before dark, place rolled newspaper, bamboo tubes, or short pieces of hose near plants where earwigs are active. Check and empty the traps in the morning. Repeat the routine as needed.
Oil-can traps
Set a low-sided can near the affected area with vegetable oil and a drop of fish oil or bacon grease as bait. Check it regularly and dispose of the contents responsibly. The sources describe these as trapping methods, not as evidence of a particular capture rate.

Keep earwigs from entering the home
Sweep or vacuum earwigs found indoors. Inspect gaps around likely entry points and seal them with suitable materials such as caulk or weatherstripping. Clear nearby outdoor debris and manage water around the structure where practical; both steps can reduce the damp shelter earwigs favor.
Use pesticides only when appropriate
UC IPM says insecticides should rarely be needed when cultural practices are followed. If you are considering a pesticide, use only a product labeled for the intended site and pest, follow its label, and seek local Extension guidance when needed. UC IPM’s advice is for California home and landscape management; pesticide rules and product labels vary by location, so do not treat that regional guidance as universal.
