To avoid ordering a mismatched LED bulb, compare the bulb shape and fixture requirements, brightness in lumens, color temperature, and package quantity with the Amazon listing before you buy. If an order arrives damaged, defective, or different from what you expected, open Your Orders and check the item’s return or replacement options; eligibility depends on the item.
How to choose an LED bulb that fits
Start with the fixture and bulb shape
Identify the fixture the bulb will go into and check the old bulb and fixture for shape and size information. A bulb that fits a standard lamp may not suit a recessed can, ceiling fan, pendant, sconce, or accent fixture. ENERGY STAR’s brightness guide recommends choosing a shape suited to the application. Check the fixture’s own requirements rather than assuming that a matching socket alone makes every bulb appropriate.
Match brightness by lumens
Lumens describe light output; watts describe energy use. ENERGY STAR says, “Brightness is a description of light output, which is measured in lumens (not watts).” Its equivalency guide gives these minimum lumen comparisons for familiar incandescent bulbs:

These are ENERGY STAR’s equivalency figures; the page does not state a publication year. Use the lumen figure to match the light output you want, then choose the lowest actual wattage that supplies it. A “60-watt equivalent” LED is not necessarily a 60-watt bulb: check the listing’s actual energy-use specification.

Pick the color appearance
Color temperature is measured in kelvins (K). ENERGY STAR’s 2020 consumer lighting guide associates soft or warm white with about 2200–3000K, neutral or cool white with 3500–4100K, and daylight with 5000–6500K. As the guide puts it, “Lower K means warmer, yellowish light, while higher K means cooler, bluer light.” Choose the appearance that suits the room and the other lighting already there.
What to check on the Amazon listing
Before adding bulbs to your cart, compare the product details with the old bulb, fixture, and the amount of light and color you want. ENERGY STAR notes that a Lighting Facts label can show brightness, life, light appearance, and energy used. Look for equivalent information in the listing and on the product package.

- Shape and application: Confirm the bulb is intended for your fixture, not just that it has a compatible base.
- Lumens and actual watts: Check the listed light output and energy use separately; watt-equivalent wording is a comparison, not actual power draw.
- Color temperature: Match the Kelvin range to the warm, neutral, or daylight appearance you want.
- Pack quantity: Verify how many bulbs the listing includes and how many you need.
- Other fixture requirements: If your fixture uses a dimmer or has another specific requirement, check the bulb and fixture details for compatibility instead of assuming it.
- Eligibility: Check the product detail page and your order history for the item’s return eligibility before purchase.
There is no single best LED bulb for every household fixture. A useful comparison starts with the actual requirements of your fixture and then compares current listings on fit, lumens, color temperature, quantity, and any certification shown.

Amazon’s U.S. return guidance says to check an item’s eligibility on its product detail page and in Order History. Its policy describes most items as returnable within 30 days of delivery when they meet the stated conditions, but item-specific eligibility controls; do not assume every bulb order qualifies.

- Open Your Orders and find the bulb order.
- Select Return or replace items if that option is available.
- Choose the reason that best describes the problem, then follow the instructions shown for that order.
- Read the return deadline and replacement terms. Amazon says the original item may need to be returned by the specified date to avoid a charge for keeping both items.
- If replacement is offered, check its displayed timing. Amazon says shipment can depend on returning the original and on stock. If a replacement is unavailable, you may need to return the item and place a new order.
