Choose a Wi-Fi router by matching it to your internet plan, the devices in your home, your floor plan and your need for wired connections—not by buying the box with the biggest advertised speed. A router can distribute your connection; it cannot make your internet service faster.

Start with the internet service you pay for

Check your provider’s plan and, if possible, measure the connection you actually receive. The router’s internet (WAN) port and real-world throughput should suit that service. If you expect to upgrade your plan or transfer large files over a fast local network, account for those needs too.

Do not treat a router’s advertised combined Wi-Fi rate as the speed one phone or laptop will receive. Such figures are theoretical maxima across bands and conditions. Actual performance depends on the router and client device, their settings, cabling, distance, walls and interference. A faster-rated router will not raise the speed supplied by your provider.

Check which Wi-Fi features your devices can use

List the phones, computers, televisions, consoles and smart-home devices that matter. A newer Wi-Fi generation or frequency band is useful only when the device connecting to it supports it. In particular, access to the 6 GHz band requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E or later equipment; many older devices cannot use it.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Higher-frequency bands can provide more throughput nearby, but they generally have less range and pass through obstacles less effectively. The 2.4 GHz band usually reaches farther and handles obstacles better; 5 GHz is typically faster at shorter range; 6 GHz can be fast and less congested nearby, but its signal also loses strength through walls and floors. Your devices may use different bands, so compatibility and where you use them matter more than a router’s headline generation.

Decide whether one router can cover the home

Consider where the signal needs to reach and what lies between the router and those rooms. Before replacing equipment, try placing the router in a central, elevated, unobstructed position. A router tucked in a cabinet or at one end of a multi-floor home can leave weak spots even if its specifications look impressive.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

If the layout still leaves dead zones, choose a coverage approach based on the building and available wiring:

  • One router: A reasonable starting point when a centrally placed unit reaches the areas where you use Wi-Fi.
  • Extender: Can relay a signal into a weak area, but it is a coverage tool, not a guaranteed speed upgrade.
  • Mesh system: Consider it when several areas or floors need coverage. Wireless links between mesh nodes use capacity for backhaul; a system with wired backhaul can avoid sharing wireless capacity for that connection where Ethernet is available.
  • Wired access point: If you can run Ethernet to a distant area, an access point there can provide Wi-Fi without relying on a wireless link back to the router.

Coverage depends on the specific home and equipment; no universal area or room count can be inferred from a router’s speed rating alone.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Make security and update support part of the purchase

Prefer WPA3 Personal when your devices support it. The Federal Trade Commission says, “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information,” referring to WPA3 and WPA2. WPA2 Personal is a suitable fallback in the FTC’s guidance; avoid legacy WEP or WPA-only security.

Look for a clear firmware-update process and a current support policy for the exact model. NIST’s NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, frames consumer router security as a product-lifecycle concern. The sources do not establish a universal minimum support duration, so check the manufacturer’s current policy rather than assuming every router receives updates for the same length of time.

Count the wired connections you need

Count the devices you may want to connect by Ethernet—such as a television, desktop computer, game console, access point or storage device—and check both the number and speed of the router’s LAN ports. Also check the WAN/Internet port speed against your service and local-network needs. If you need more Ethernet sockets than the router provides, a network switch can add ports.

USB ports and extra operating modes are only worthwhile if you have a specific use for them. For example, D-Link’s 2025 R95 datasheet lists 2.5-Gigabit WAN/LAN ports, WPA2/WPA3 Personal and router, extender and bridge modes. That is one manufacturer’s specification example, not a recommendation or an independently tested result; verify the current specifications for any model you consider.

Compare the complete ownership trade-offs

Before deciding, compare setup and ongoing use as well as hardware specifications. Check whether administration depends on a phone app, which controls are available, and whether security or parental-control features require a subscription. Current prices and subscription terms are model- and plan-specific; verify them with the manufacturer or seller before purchase.
