For most home gardens, space pepper plants about 18 inches apart, with 30–36 inches between rows. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal rule: extension recommendations range from 12 to 24 inches between plants, and the best fit depends on the cultivar and whether you’re planting rows, a bed, or a container.
Spacing peppers in a standard garden row
Measure from the center of one plant to the center of the next. For a single row, about 18 inches is a practical default. Iowa State University Extension recommends 18 inches between plants and 24–30 inches between rows; the University of Minnesota Extension recommends 18 inches between plants and 30–36 inches between rows. Iowa State’s home-garden guidance and Minnesota Extension’s pepper guidance support that starting point.
Published home-garden recommendations differ. Maryland Extension gives 12–24 inches in-row and 30–36 inches between rows, while Virginia Tech recommends 18–24 inches between plants and 30–36 inches between rows. The University of Georgia’s 2022 publication recommends 12–24 inches in-row and about three feet between rows. Maryland Extension, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and University of Georgia Extension provide those ranges.
If you have room, use the wider end of the recommended range for your chosen cultivar and layout. Closer spacing is also a published option, but Minnesota Extension notes that closer spacing requires fertilizer at planting and during summer. No single distance is established as best for every garden.

Planting in a bed or staggered rows
Bed spacing is not the same measurement as spacing between rows in a conventional single-row layout. Illinois Extension recommends 14–18 inches apart in all directions for peppers grown in beds, or 18–24 inches within rows. Illinois Extension’s pepper guidance describes these alternatives.
For a staggered arrangement, Iowa State describes two offset rows 12–18 inches apart, with plants 18 inches apart within each row and 30–36 inches between double rows. Maryland Extension also describes staggered double rows in a two-foot-wide bed. Use one complete layout’s measurements together; don’t combine bed spacing with the between-row distance from a single-row plan.

Adjust spacing for pepper type
Spacing guidance can vary by cultivar and pepper type. Clemson Cooperative Extension gives a general recommendation of 12 inches between plants and three feet between rows, but recommends more room for pimento peppers: 18–24 inches in-row and 42 inches between rows. These are Clemson’s recommendations for its stated context, rather than a universal rule. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s pepper fact sheet provides both figures.
Virginia Tech notes that staking can keep pepper plants upright and help protect fruit from sunburn. If you plan to stake plants, account for the space needed to install and access the supports when laying out your rows. Virginia Tech’s home-garden guidance discusses staking.

Growing peppers in containers
Use one pepper plant per pot. Oregon State University Extension suggests a container about 12 inches across and at least 12 inches deep; Maryland Extension gives a five-gallon minimum. These are recommendations from the respective extension services, not a guarantee that every cultivar will perform identically in those container sizes. Oregon State Extension and Maryland Extension give container guidance.

Commercial planting recommendations are tied to production systems and should not be substituted for home-garden spacing. Virginia Tech’s production table lists open-field bell peppers at 12–18 inches in-row and 48–60 inches between beds, with different spacing for greenhouse and high-tunnel systems. Those bed distances reflect the commercial system described in the table, not a standard backyard row. See Virginia Tech’s commercial vegetable production recommendations.
