Ebony is a trade name for several dark woods, often from trees in the genus Diospyros—not the name of one single wood species. Its density, appearance, uses, and trade requirements depend on the species, where it grew, and whether it is raw timber or a finished product.
What is ebony wood?
“Ebony” describes multiple woods rather than one botanical species. For accurate identification, the trade name should be accompanied by the species and geographic origin. Kew recognizes Diospyros ebenum as a species native to southern India, Sri Lanka, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Kew’s Plants of the World Online.
Ebony is therefore both a material name used in commerce and, in some contexts, a reference to particular trees. The label alone does not identify which species a product contains.
What is ebony used for?
Documented applications include furniture and musical instruments. Ebony has been used for guitar and violin fingerboards, piano keys, pegs, and wind instruments, as well as cutlery and decorative marquetry or inlay. The CITES 2023 timber guide describes these uses.

For a construction or woodworking project, the useful question is not simply whether a material is called ebony. Confirm the species, origin, form (solid wood, veneer, or finished item), and suitability for the intended application with the supplier.
Does every ebony product have the same appearance?
No. “Ebony” can refer to woods with different colors and grain, including more uniformly black material and wood with visible streaking. Species identity and origin matter when appearance is a specification. Ask for botanical identification and product documentation rather than relying on a general trade name.

Are ebony and ebony products regulated?
Trade rules depend on the listed population, the product form, and the applicable jurisdiction. The CITES guide says the Madagascan population of Diospyros was included in Appendix II in 2013 and describes a trade suspension in place since 2016. Its annotation #5 applies to logs, sawn wood, and veneer sheets; the guide says finished instruments and furniture are not covered by that annotation. This is not a blanket rule for every ebony species or every country. Check current requirements with the relevant CITES authority before buying, selling, or transporting a product across borders.

Botanic Gardens Conservation International reports that 193 of 806 ebony taxa—24%—are represented in ex situ collections; the project page does not state the year for these figures. It also reports that only 25% of taxa known to be threatened are represented in ex situ collections, with no year stated on that page: BGCI: Assessing the world’s Ebonies.

- Wood Name - Indian Ebony
- Botanical Name - Diospyros crassiflora.
- Length - 6 inches
- Width - 3/4 inches
- Thickness - 3/4 inches
These collection figures provide conservation context, but they do not establish the status or sourcing of a particular piece of wood. For purchasing or specifying ebony, documentation of species and provenance is essential; the word “ebony” by itself is not proof of legal or sustainable sourcing.
