You don’t need a conventional garden plot to grow flowers, herbs, or vegetables. Containers can turn a patio, balcony, deck, rooftop, or other hard surface into a garden; raised beds can make a small yard or a patch of poor soil more workable. Start with the site you have, then choose the method and plants that suit its light, space, water access, and local conditions.
Start with the space you have
Before choosing plants, check four things: how much direct light the site receives, how you will get water there, how much usable floor or ground area you have, and whether the growing surface is a balcony, patio, roof, or yard. These conditions shape what is practical. A sunny, windy rooftop, for example, can dry containers faster than a sheltered spot.
- Hard surface or very little room: Containers can sit on patios, decks, rooftops, stoops, and balconies. They are also useful when you want to keep plants separate from the ground.
- Yard with poor soil, or no suitable soil at the surface: A raised bed creates a defined growing area above the existing ground. It is a more fixed choice than a pot.
- Space and exposure may change: Containers can be moved when conditions allow, but remember that a large, planted pot can be heavy.
Utah State University Extension’s Create a Garden Anywhere and University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s small-space container guide describe container growing as an option for places beyond conventional garden beds.
Choose containers for the plants, not just the look
Pot depth and volume need to accommodate the plant’s roots. Utah State University Extension gives these example depths in its 2024 guidance; they are starting points, not guarantees for every variety or growing condition.

| Plant group | Example container depth |
|---|---|
| Leafy vegetables | 6–8 inches |
| Root vegetables | 8–14 inches |
| Fruiting vegetables | 12–16 inches |
| Wildflowers | 8 inches or more |
Choose a pot that is deep and spacious enough for the plants you intend to grow, and consider its weight once filled and watered. Utah State’s guide also notes that raised beds are usually 12–18 inches deep, though they can be as shallow as 6 inches; appropriate depth depends on what you are growing and the site.
Set up pots for drainage and healthy roots
Most containers need drainage holes so excess water can escape. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Container and Raised-Bed Gardening explains that adding gravel to the bottom is not needed as a substitute for drainage. If a plant has special bog-like water requirements, account for those needs deliberately rather than applying the usual pot setup automatically.

Use a lightweight soilless container mix rather than ordinary garden topsoil in small pots. New Hampshire Cooperative Extension notes that topsoil can be too dense for containers. Raised-bed soil is a separate decision: follow local guidance for an appropriate bed mix or for improving existing soil rather than assuming the same medium suits both pots and beds.
Plan for closer watering and nutrient checks
Containers hold a limited amount of growing medium and can dry faster than garden soil, especially in hot, sunny, or windy conditions. Check the medium and plant regularly instead of following a universal watering calendar. Container size, weather, exposure, and the plant itself all affect how often water is needed.

Plants in pots may also need nutrients replenished more often because the amount of medium is limited. Follow the instructions for the chosen container mix and fertilizer, and adjust based on the plant’s condition rather than applying a rigid schedule. New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s container guidance covers these small-space considerations.
Use a raised bed when ground soil is the obstacle
A raised bed is useful when a yard’s soil is poor, drainage needs improvement, or gardening at ground level is difficult. Unlike a container, a typical raised bed is open to the ground below; it defines and elevates a growing area rather than isolating each plant in a pot. It generally suits a site where you can dedicate space to a fixed structure.

Think through access before building or placing one: leave room to reach the planting area, and choose dimensions that let you tend plants without stepping into the bed. Bed depth, drainage, soil conditions, and local climate all affect what will grow well. There is no single plant list that works for every country garden. Match plant size and root needs to the pot or bed, then check regional guidance for light, planting dates, weather, and care. Native plants can be an option for ornamental interest and habitat value, but recommendations are region-specific: the UF/IFAS Extension Polk County container article gives Florida examples, not a universal list. Outside Florida, look to your local university Extension or trusted regional native-plant sources.
