Civil engineer Samuel R. Probasco reported that it was used in October 1872 to drive sheet piles for a dam project at Parsonage Creek on Long Island. The surviving accounts support a historical explanation of its purpose and broad principle—not a safe or suitable modern construction guide.
What was the gunpowder-powered hammer?
Shaw’s device was a pile driver: a machine for driving piles into the ground during foundation and water-control construction. It was not a general-purpose hammer. Probasco’s account, published in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Transactions in January 1874, describes the machine working on sheet piles for a dam in the Parsonage Creek valley on Long Island. Read the bibliographic record for Probasco’s account.
How did it work, in broad terms?
Historical descriptions say gunpowder was used to impart motion to a pile-driving hammer, which struck a pile to advance it into the ground. That is the useful conceptual answer: explosive power was applied to a specialized construction task. The available accounts do not establish a validated modern design specification, nor do they justify detailed directions for building, charging, igniting, or operating such a mechanism.
What do the historical sources establish?
Probasco’s account of the Long Island work
The strongest source in the available record is Probasco’s 1874 ASCE paper, “An Account of the Operations of the Gunpowder Pile-Driver.” It documents reported use in October 1872 on sheet piles for the Parsonage Creek dam project. It is a primary account of that work, but the bibliographic summary alone does not establish a universal performance record.

Period press and trade-journal claims
An 1869 Engineering and Mining Journal item promoted a gunpowder pile-driving device, and Scientific American also covered Shaw’s gunpowder hammer. Numerical claims printed in those period publications should be understood as contemporary reporting or promotion, not independently verified test results or modern performance data. They are not needed to explain the machine’s purpose.
A reported site limitation
The secondary engineering history Piling Engineering describes a design launched around 1870 and reports that the machine had trouble in sandy conditions at the Severn Tunnel works. This is a reported limitation at a particular site, not evidence that the approach failed everywhere or a complete assessment of its capabilities.

Why this is not a modern build project
The historical accounts explain an engineering idea; they do not supply the information needed to reproduce it safely or establish that doing so would be suitable or lawful today. Explosive-powered machinery carries obvious serious hazards, and the sources here do not provide current construction, explosives, or workplace-safety requirements.
Modern pile driving is still an industrial construction operation, but equipment and procedures depend on the job and applicable professional requirements. A NIOSH case report describes an air-powered pile-driving hammer and a fatal incident; it illustrates the seriousness of worksite hazards, but it is not a complete operating standard. NIOSH FACE reports.

Historical context: black-powder manufacture
Black-powder production was an important industry, and the ASME landmark account of the Brandywine River Powder Mills notes that production buildings were separated to reduce the consequences of an explosion. That industrial context helps explain why explosive materials demanded careful handling and facility design; it does not provide evidence about the details of Shaw’s machine.
