Choose a climbing plant for the conditions and structure it will grow on—not just for its flowers. Some climbers cling to surfaces themselves; others twine or scramble and need a trellis, wires or another support. Check the plant’s eventual size, light and moisture needs, and pruning requirements before planting, then install its support first.

Choose a climber that suits the site

Start with the planting conditions and the space available. Check the plant label for light requirements and mature size, and consider soil moisture and drainage, exposure, whether you want evergreen or seasonal foliage, flowering season, fragrance and how much pruning the plant will need. A plant that suits a sheltered, moist site may struggle in dry soil or strong exposure.

The examples below illustrate different choices; they are not a ranking of the best climbers. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) guidance cited here is written for UK gardening conditions, so planting seasons and local suitability can differ elsewhere.

Plant Growth habit and support Site or care consideration
Honeysuckle (Lonicera) Twines around a support; provide wires or trellis. The RHS describes dappled shade as beneficial for healthy growth and flowering. Heavy wet soil or a dry site can cause problems.
Clematis Types range from vigorous to compact; climbing forms are commonly grown on supports. Pruning varies by type. Identify the clematis before pruning, and follow its dedicated planting guidance—large-flowered clematis have different planting-depth advice.
Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) Evergreen climber with twining woody stems. Allow for its mature size and provide a support suited to twining growth.

Does a climbing plant need a trellis?

Not always, but many climbers need something to climb. Self-clinging plants can attach to a surface, while twining and scrambling plants generally need a framework or ties to guide them. Even a self-clinging plant may benefit from help getting established, so check the needs of the particular plant rather than assuming it can manage without support.

Match the support to the plant and setting

Possible supports include trellis, horizontal or vertical wires held away from a wall, a free-standing screen in a sheltered site, or an appropriately anchored obelisk. The plant’s growth habit, eventual size and the structure’s setting determine what is suitable. Put the support in place before planting so new growth can be directed toward it from the start.

Allow space at a wall

For a wall installation, RHS guidance describes wires held by vine eyes or trellis raised from the wall. Leave space behind the support for airflow and access. When planting by a wall, position the planting hole away from the wall rather than directly against it; the plant needs access to suitable soil and rain as well as room to grow.

How to plant and establish a climber

In UK conditions, the RHS says most climbers are best planted in spring or autumn. Check the plant’s label and local conditions before choosing a planting time; the advice may not transfer directly to other climates.

  1. Check the plant and its label. Confirm its light needs, mature size, planting depth and support requirements.
  2. Install the support first. Choose a system appropriate to the plant and structure, with room behind wall-mounted supports for airflow and access.
  3. Prepare the planting hole. The RHS general guide recommends a hole wider than the container and generally about the same depth. Follow specific instructions for the plant: large-flowered clematis are an exception to usual planting-depth guidance.
  4. Plant, backfill and water thoroughly. Set the plant at the appropriate depth for its type, backfill the hole and water it in well.
  5. Mulch and guide growth. Mulch around the plant, keeping mulch clear of the stems, and direct shoots toward the support.

Water during establishment

Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and water as needed through at least the first growing season. Pay closer attention during hot, dry or windy weather. How often a plant needs water depends on the weather, soil, species and whether it is growing in the ground or a container.

Train shoots without damaging them

Check new growth regularly and redirect it toward the intended support. Where a shoot needs tying in, use soft twine and tie it loosely. RHS recommends soft twine rather than wire or plastic ties, which can damage stems and leaves. Continue to monitor ties as shoots grow so they do not become restrictive.

When should you prune climbing plants?

There is no single pruning calendar for all climbers. First identify the plant and how it flowers: plants that flower on the previous season’s growth are generally pruned just after flowering, while plants that flower on current-season growth are often pruned in late winter or early spring. The RHS also distinguishes approaches for vigorous climbers, moderately vigorous climbers and wall-trained shrubs.
