The best manual cable cutter is the one rated for your conductor material and size, with a design that fits the space and leverage you have. For compact one-hand work, options include Klein’s 63050EINS and Southwire’s CCP9; for larger conductors, Klein’s 63035 and Southwire’s CCP750 have different published capacities. For two-hand leverage, KNIPEX’s 95 17 500 is rated for copper and aluminum conductors up to 150 mm² / 27 mm. These are manufacturer specifications, not results of comparative tool testing.
How to choose a cable cutter
Start with the cable you actually need to cut. Check its conductor material and the size in the unit used by the cutter’s manufacturer; do not assume that a model’s rating applies to every cutter from the same brand or of the same design. Then consider access, handle length, leverage, and any stated restrictions on cable construction or material.
- Material: Confirm the cutter is specified for copper, aluminum, or both. The listed copper-and-aluminum models below exclude some steel products, ACSR, or wire rope.
- Capacity: Match the rating to the specific conductor or cable size. AWG, MCM, mm², and diameter are different specifications; do not treat their numbers as interchangeable.
- Design and access: Compact one-hand cutters can suit confined areas. Longer two-hand shears provide a different handle and leverage arrangement; ratcheting cutters are another option for larger cable.
- Cut quality: Check whether the manufacturer describes a clean cut without crushing if that matters for the job. Capacity alone does not establish equal cut quality or performance between models.
- Insulation: If insulated-tool protection is relevant, verify the official rating and inspect the insulation. Ordinary dipped handles are not a substitute for a rated insulated tool.
Compare these manufacturer-rated cable cutters
| Model | Manufacturer-stated capacity and materials | Design and key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Klein 63050EINS | 4/0 aluminum, 2/0 soft copper, and 100-pair 24 AWG communications cable | Insulated, 1000 V rated, and VDE certified; not for ACSR or steel. Klein advises de-energizing whenever possible. |
| Klein 63050-INS | Same listed capacities as the 63050EINS: 4/0 aluminum, 2/0 soft copper, and 100-pair 24 AWG communications cable | Insulated; individually tested to meet or exceed ASTM F1505-16(2021) and IEC 60900:2018. Inspect the insulation and destroy the tool if it is damaged. |
| Klein 63035 | 350 MCM copper and aluminum | Utility cable cutter; explicitly not insulated. Not for steel or ACSR. |
| KNIPEX 95 17 500 | Copper and aluminum single or stranded conductors; 150 mm² / 27 mm listed capacity | Two-hand shears, 500 mm long, with VDE-tested handles. Not for steel wire or wire rope. |
| Southwire CCP9 | Up to 2/0 copper and 4/0 AWG aluminum | 9-inch-class, one-hand cable cutter. |
| Southwire CCP750 | Up to 750 MCM copper, 1000 MCM aluminum, and 1 1/2-inch communications cable | Heavy-duty shear cutter. |
Capacity figures are the manufacturers’ specifications for these individual models. They do not establish a head-to-head performance ranking, and a larger printed capacity does not by itself prove that two tools cut equally cleanly or easily.
Which design fits the job?
Compact, one-hand cutters
For work where a compact tool is useful, compare the Klein 63050EINS or Southwire CCP9 against the exact cable rating you need. Their published capacities overlap for some aluminum and copper sizes, but the Klein listing also specifies soft copper and a communications-cable capacity, while the Southwire CCP9 is described as a 9-inch-class cutter. Confirm the material and construction of your cable against the model’s own specification.
#1 Best Overall
- Cable cutter cuts 4/0 aluminum, 2/0 soft copper, 100-pair 24 AWG communications cable
- Precision, one-hand shearing action
- Cable-gripping shear-type jaws
- Perfect for working in confined spaces and can be carried in most tool pouches
- Made in USA with custom, US-made tools steel
Utility cutters for larger copper or aluminum cable
Klein specifies the 63035 for 350 MCM copper and aluminum. It is not insulated and is not rated for steel or ACSR. Do not select it for a job that requires an insulated tool, or infer a rating for other Klein cutters from its capacity.
Two-hand shears
KNIPEX’s 95 17 500 is a 500 mm two-hand shear with a listed capacity of 150 mm² / 27 mm for copper and aluminum single or stranded conductors. Its longer handles distinguish it from compact one-hand designs, but it is not intended for steel wire or wire rope.

Heavy-duty and ratcheting options
Southwire lists its CCP750 for up to 750 MCM copper, 1000 MCM aluminum, and 1 1/2-inch communications cable. KNIPEX’s March 2026 wire-preparation brochure also describes a ratcheting-cutter category for cable up to 1 1/2-inch diameter, alongside compact, double-jaw, and insulated variants with different capacities. That category-wide figure is not a rating for every KNIPEX ratcheting model; check the specification of the exact model before choosing it.
Material exclusions matter
A cutter designed for copper and aluminum is not automatically suitable for harder or differently constructed materials. The Klein 63050EINS and 63035 exclude steel and ACSR; the KNIPEX 95 17 500 excludes steel wire and wire rope. Use a purpose-designed tool for a material that is excluded, and confirm that tool’s published rating rather than relying on appearance or a similar model’s capacity.

Insulated cutters and safe use
Klein identifies the 63050EINS as 1000 V rated and VDE certified; its 63050-INS listing says the tool is individually tested to meet or exceed ASTM F1505-16(2021) and IEC 60900:2018. These specifications distinguish insulated tools from ordinary cutters, but insulated protection is not permission to work on energized conductors. Klein advises de-energizing lines and equipment whenever possible.
