The best small cooktop depends first on whether you can install an appliance in the counter or need a removable countertop burner. For a built-in option, compare the cutout and utility requirements—not just the “12-inch” label. Fisher & Paykel’s CI122ZDTB5 is a two-zone induction model requiring 208–240V and licensed-electrician installation; Summit’s GCJ2SSLP is a two-burner gas model preset for LP with a different cutout. Neither is a portable countertop burner.
Start with installation type
Built-in cooktops occupy a counter cutout and must match the kitchen’s electrical supply or gas connection. A portable countertop burner sits on the counter and can be removed when it is not in use. That distinction determines what measurements and services matter before cooking features do.
- Choose built-in if you can make the required cutout and provide the specified utility connection.
- Choose portable if you need a removable appliance or cannot alter the counter. A cited portable-induction brochure establishes the category, but does not identify a specific consumer model to recommend.
Both documented built-in examples have two cooking zones or burners. They are product examples with published specifications, not hands-on test winners; the available information does not establish a universal best choice, current prices or stock, fit in a particular kitchen, or long-term reliability.

What to check before buying
Measure the appliance and the opening separately
A nominal 12-inch width does not tell you whether a cooktop fits. The Fisher & Paykel model’s body is 11 13/16 inches wide, but its cutout size is not provided on the cited product page. Get the cutout dimensions and required clearances from the model’s installation guide. Summit publishes both overall dimensions and a cutout of 11.25 by 19 inches. Do not use a body measurement as a substitute for the required opening.
Match the available utility
For the induction model, check whether the kitchen can support its stated 208–240V, 60Hz supply and 14 or 16A rating; have a licensed electrician assess the installation. The gas option is preset for LP, so verify that the intended fuel supply and connection are compatible before purchase. Do not assume a gas model is ready for a different fuel.

Summit’s gas model has two burners with different listed BTU ratings, giving it two cooking positions. These specifications describe the products; they do not establish comparative efficiency, savings or cooking performance.

Pick built-in induction when the electrical installation works
The CI122ZDTB5 is a concrete option for a small kitchen where a two-zone built-in appliance suits the counter plan and the specified electrical supply can be provided. Fisher & Paykel describes it as “Perfect for compact kitchens” and highlights its flexible SmartZone; that is manufacturer language, not an independent performance assessment. Check the installation guide for cutout and clearance details before deciding it fits.

Pick built-in LP gas only when fuel and cutout match
The Summit GCJ2SSLP is a narrower choice for a kitchen set up for LP and able to accommodate its published cutout. Its overall dimensions and cutout are different measurements, so verify both against the actual counter and installation plan.
Pick portable when you need a removable burner
A portable induction cooker avoids committing to a built-in counter cutout, but the available product information does not establish a specific consumer model to recommend here. Check the individual portable unit’s dimensions, electrical requirements, cookware compatibility and operating instructions before buying.
